Just wondering why those pics would make you think the man thinks badly of his dogs. I in no way agree with culling, just wondering about whats wrong with the pics?

Here are a few pics of my (at the time) 4 1/2 month old show line groenendael having a try at schutzhund. It wasn't my thing and we never did it again, but sure he would have loved it if we had.

No with any training it is ALWAYS the same

    ABC

Attitude - if you do not get the attitude right, forget anything else

Behaviour - if you have the right attitude you can get the behaviour

Control - once you have the attitude and the behaviour then comes control. ;)

I don't know Rune. We only tried it the once and like I say I didn't want to do it with my dogs, but what they did with my pup was what they did with them all, as we often used to watch waiting for the ringcraft which was afterwards.

I am certainly not saying it was right. I am just saying my lad had alot of fun at the time.

None---as I thought you knew? Nor would I. TBH the jury is still out on Schuzthund for me but it does seem to have changed since it first arrived here---or maybe the people doing it are of a different attitude.

I was just saying what I had been taught ----I am happy to accept it is wrong----if you say so

I do know that John Grantham and associate bods used to teach the bite work and had little control and did occassionally have teeny 'accidents' due to that.

PS---I avoided saying that post reminded me of someone else we all know and love---but then I didn't avoid it!

Johnny used to have a large male GSD, Dringhoe Spartan if I remember correctly? over which he had little control.

He was really too much for John, but he had a lot of fun with him, but the dog used to go self employed on the PD field.

The main mistake was training a high drive dog the way low drive dogs were taught.

You have to alter your strategy with the type of dog you have at the end of the lead.

The Gronendael in the photo is a young one which is having his prey drive raised.

For some dogs, very little prey drive training is required.

    Thanks for explaining.

Big long haired dog I knew---it went self employed in more places than that! Definitely had a high prey drive!

On the other hand..... dog ownership is a broad church and no single person knows it all.
I find blokes dressing up in padded trousers and swinging clubs at dogs in arenas hysterically funny. On a par with Mexican wrestlers.
Still... whatever floats your boat, I suppose.

these dogs ,just like all of them, become pets,if not worked, they do other things, there just a dog.some people will whant to preserve the breed for its intentions.my dogos dont hunt and that peeves some people, who are die hard hunters,off..they hate the pet factor in a hunt breed.

I think you have a point there - Belgians started off as sheep herders and guardians, then later came their use as protection dogs. The earliest Belgian Shepherd trials were on sheep if I recall rightly - there are records preserved of that.

Is "culling" a euphemism for euthanising? It kinda sounds like that from the messages here.

This is an old thread but.......
Yes Tom, I'm afraid it is. Nowadays mismarked puppies are often touted as being rare - and often command higher prices because of this, but not that long ago an undesireably coloured, (ie. not permitted under KC Standards), puppy was something you quietly gave away to a pet home. Some of the more established breeders did not rear these puppies beyond birth, presumably because they either did not wish the line to continue, or to get a reputation for producing mismarked stock.
Attitudes have changed a lot over the years, in some ways breeders have become more enlightened and humane, but there are also more charlatan breeders who care little about breed standards and are prepared to exploit these lines.

I know Callie probably dreams of being one of those dogs. Unfortunately with his build getting on the bed is a great effort...he wouldn't be able to get even his paws on that pole.
