My advice would be to be warneed that NI's have seperation anxiety issues and cannot be left alone more than an hour maximum.

I knew this when I got Jess but didnt realise how much a a problem this could turn out to be.

    Don't leave them alone
    Buy a good hoover
Learn to have a constant shadow
Be prepared to be 'told off'
    Forget conventional training

...and above all, love them for what they are ;-)

  They do like to sit on your head dont they. I always find that so funny.
My two are total opposites in everything. One loves the hoover (gets a going over himself) one doesnt. One loves fireworks one doesnt. One loves the shower one doesnt.
Window cleaner laughs at my two as they put their paws on the windowsill and watch his every move.

    Where does this come from??????

Is it inherited from perhaps people breeding from bitches with SA thus the issue perpetuated?? I have no idea BTW just curious since Mals, huskies and GSD do not have these issues.

I think since the function of this breed is as a PET this is something that should be addressed with breeding programmes or is SA NOT something that can be inherited? Nervousness etc can be inherited but I am not a breeder so do not know about these things :) :) :)

Mine must be the odd ones out,as they are fine when left alone, and have been since babies.
They like to do everything with me, but can be left quite happily

My two are different, Brodie I can leave all day no problem. Tikaani is okay as long as his mum is there but he's getting better. I can now leave him in the car and he doesnt scare everyone to death howling for all he's worth.

I'm not sure Muddiwarx, but you could have a valid point. My 2 GSDs don't have separation issues, it's only Luca, but, I knew that when I took her on. :)

Mine don't have SA, I think they would go with anyone without a backward glance. Mind you I have always left them for some periods of time right from the outset, and they have each other as well. Now Cariad wouldn't bother being without Maelona, but Lona would bother if Cariad went and she didn't. I am addressing this obviously, but I think it is all a matter of self confidence, Cariad is extremely confident and outgoing but Lona needs that bit of extra encouragement to enable her to acquire this.
For instance, we have a dog behaviourist at dog training, he called Cariad over and she went straight over no problem, Lona sat with me and just looked at him like he had run mad. Cariad will jump through a hoop, Lona will eventually walk through it, dragging her feet incidentally, after a lot of coaxing!!!

I dont know wether all NI's have seperation anxiety issues, but I gather it runs in the breed.
Many people have told me about this and it has turned out to be true.

I have no idea if the SA is passed on from dam to litter, or wether it is just because they are very much people dogs they dont like to be alone?
It is something I will enquire about though.

I think that NI's are generally ok if you have another dog for them to be with. Sadly untill we have a bigger place we cant get another dog.
