I remember when we were considering an Alaskan Malamute and went to visit a few. One couple we visited had hens and told us that the dogs hadn't bothered the hens at all for a long time but one day just chased & killed one. Their male was also very territorial & could not be trusted around other male dogs. Although this may not be the norm it made me wary of owning one. I do still love the breed though.
We now have a lovely male in our extended family and he is fine with other dogs (since he was castrated). His owner does run him alongside his bike but the dog is very laid back, has great recall and doesn't seem to have a high prey drive either. He can be a bit possessive of toys/bowls though so we have to take this into account if he visits.
E.T.A: the dogs we have now (Ute's so basically gsd, sibe & a bit of unknown thrown in!) do have high prey drives and love to run. The two we have are real characters and have wonderful natures but I'd say are a lot more exciteable and driven than their mal buddy.
