Im not a believer in using ‘newspaper or ‘puppy pads', where is the logic in teaching them that its ok to mess indoors, then few weeks later expect them to go outside, very confusing for them. For the first few weeks I always had mine in big cardboard box beside my bed, took them in the garden after every feed, drink, playtime, sleep and used the command go toilet waited till they went and gave lots of praise, brought them inside as soon as they've done it, at night I used to get up every few hours to take them out, well worth the effort as they were clean by 4mths old.
it helped our gsd mix a lot actually, with not going on the carpet, and with letting us know she needed to go so we could take her outside. The concept is lost on the mal though. lol. Which is okay, doesn't work for everyone, it helped immensely with the other because we weren't in a house, so the smell of all the other dogs put her off, up until she decided she had to mark her territory everywhere, then we had no problem getting her to go outside, a million times in one outing. lol She got giardia there too as a pup, so it helped then with the oh no its too late accidents. anyway, they both do good through the night, and its a time shes more than happy to let us know if she needs to go out because she enjoys barking in our ears and watching us and how much it startles us awake lol... (she has a really high pitched chirpy bark) They eat twice a day and go out before and after. then many times throughout the day as well.
