I am so sorry for you all, you must have been devastated, , I don't know how I would have coped, but I think as everyone else has said, its nature, there was nothing you could have done.

I nearly had a heart attack last week, one of my NI's Otto was in the garden when next doors rabbit decided to join him. Luckily Otto was more miffed that a strange animal was in its garden so he just stood there and barked at it. I don't know if the rabbit was deaf, cos it just ignored him:shock:

My mum's dog's (gsd and a x breed) unfortunatley killed and ate my sister tortoise. She had left him out in her bedroom whilst out and the dogs somehow managed to get upstairs and into her room. I agree it's not a nice experiance, but nature sadly :-(

Forgot to say luckily the dog's were fine as I thought eating a tortoise could have been really bad, so we had to keep an eye on them, but they were ok.

Nature of the beast I'm afraid. Sorry your children had to see this. Lesson (sorry) learned
So sorry for the loss of your piggie,if your like me then any animal that is hurt or killed upsets me (esp pets).
Try to explain to the children that it is part of nature and please dont blame the dog, it's just life I'm afraid.

Oh dear, I'm so sorry your children saw that, but I agree with everyone else.
We lost an escapee gerbil that way to the daftest softest dog in the world. It's just nature and maybe a bit too much pent up energy from a a stint in kennels.
So sorry you lost your piggie

Like all the others i am sorry to hear this, and yes it is just nature taking over. It may have happened anytime, but maybe it happened because the dog had been away, may have had higher anxiety levels and been excited to be at home with you, momentarily forgot the rules etc etc.

If ever Tonks and our cat are serparated for a day or two we always try to reintroduce the two of them again carefully. We have been away for the week and Tonks has been over the moon to see the cat.....needless to say, the feeling isn't mutual!!

What do you mean by "dominant"? :)
Castration isn't really anything to do with a dog being strong minded or not...
It sounds as if he was either stressed out at kennels (dogs barking non stop, new environment, people etc) or else is just finding his feet again after being away and is a bit unsure as to whether he is "back to normal"...

So sad - guinea pigs are the most wonderful animals. I adore them :001: but as others have said, it is nature taking over.

I'd treat him normally but if he continues to behave very differently, a trip to the vet for a check up and perhaps a reputable behaviourist could be in order :)
