    How sad:-( I wonder what happened to the dog after it went back to the breeder.

    Indeed. Yes I wondered about that. The law I thought did not allow such dogs to be kept as 'pets' without special permission and then aren't particular conditions imposed?

    I had a quick look at 'The Dangerous Wild Animals Act (mod) 2007 and there was no mention of CWD. It sounded like only 1st and 2nd generation crossed with wolves were included but I couldn't swear to it :)

    Thanks, I wasn't sure because of the below link

    http://www.defra.gov.uk/wildlife-countryside/gwd/hybrid.htm

    It made me think they do need permission :?:

    Neither the CsV or the Saarloos are wolf hybrid dogs, they are domestic dogs, pure or crossed, unless the cross is with a wolf. Hope that helps Werewolf.

    Thanks Liz, I thought with their wolf heritage that classed them as hybrids which is why they are not recognised over here?

    Thanks for all your help those who contributed. I wish I had just looked in the search engine, I thought I remembered someone who actually has these dogs (well the pure ones not crosses) as being on here and I found the thread. So unless the law has changed I think this answers my question.

    CWD and Saarloos are domestic dogs not Wolf hybrids, many generation of dog to dog breeding and FULL documentaion has produced these BREEDS. Its exactly the same as the Bengal Cat, a domestic pet, bred via the Asian Leopard cat originally.

    I know about the Bengal, I am a cat fan;-) But that is a recognised breed here, and cat and dog recognition is different.

    I thought that the Sarloos and the Czech were not recognised here because of the wolf content?

    I believe the Sarloos is recognised by the FCI and therefore will be recognised by the KC but not included as able to be shown as there are not enough in the country, however the Czech is not, as far as I am aware, recognised by anyone and so will not be recognised by the British KC.

    Thanks Pita, I believe the Czechoslovakian Wolfdog is recognised as a breed in it Country of origin and by FC1.

    found this on the net but not sure if it is correct

    Czechoslovakian Wolfdog is recognized as a domestic dog breed by the following-
    F.C.I. = Federation Cynologique Internationale
    A.P.R.I. = American Pet Registry Inc.
    A.C.R. = American Canine Registery

    Did look on the FCI list and missed it, but that means it would be recognised by the British KC. Don't think either of the American registries would be accepted by the KC but that does not matter if the FCI lists them.

    EDIT: just had another look and can't find it, which group is it under please?

    Both Czech and Saarloos are recognised by the FCI, from memory in 1999 and 1981 onwards. The Czech is listed by the American Kennel Club. The UK KC has not yet recognised either but in a recent correspondence with them they have stated that they have no problems in accepting either breed a dogs but are requesting further clarification from DEFRA before making any decision. They also implied that any decision to include the breeds will be based on the existing breeding records. In view of the KCs recent problems it seems unlikely they will be in a hurry to take on responsibility for more dog breeds just yet. The Saarloos breed standard is FCI 311 I think. (category one dog)

    Could find the Saarloos but not the Czech on the FCI list, will look again not that it matters if you tell me they are. Think the position with the KC is they recognise anything on the FCI list but the breed is not necessarily able to be shown in the UK nor will the KC have a standard for them, that, of course, does not mean that the breed is not recognised by the club.

    Yes, you are probably right in what you say. A senior KC official told me that they have no problem with these dogs but would need to verify that pedigree records were acceptable before officially recognising them and allowing them to be shown at KC shows, they were also concerned that DEFRA would never give them a clear statement which was holding up their decision.

    The Czech WD is a section 1 (sheepdog) category in the FCI / country 3; Czekoslovakia / Breed: Ceskoslovenský Vlcak / Breed standard 332

    This would make the Czech and Saarloos recognised dog breeds in over 84 countries...

    Still not being 100% satisfied, ref the permission thing, I looked at the Shoshone Kennels website (not sure if I can put link on here) and this is what they say:

    'There are also the Saarloos wolfhund and the Czechoslovakian wolf dog (CWD,Czech), both of which are in the UK.
    Some Councils may require a licence for keeping CWD and Saarloos wolfdogs and some Councils will give written permission to keep them without a licence.Both breeds are established and registered in Europe.'

    It was nice to see such good and open advice coming from the breeders, they must know the ins and outs of these dogs, so I can only guess that if a dog is a cross of the above then the same rules/regulations/laws apply.
