Sorry I got it wrong ... checked, and it was Johnny Wilson's Spot on the dvd. Lovely rough coated black/white dog.
She is one of the worst if not the worst presenters that have ever been on the program, inane babble & a notable lack of knowledge of the subject matter Watched the first program but won't be watching the other, don't know who picked some of the competitors but I've seen local nursery standard dogs that have been better & they of course don't have the advantage of rerunning part of the course for editing into a single run ! BTW I do know what I am writing about as I have trained & run dogs in sheep dog trials(& general farm work too) & had a dog qualified to run in the English National
What do you think went wrong with some of the other competitors Dyane? My OH has two pups from a Swedish dog that Kevin Evans owns and are exceptionally strong and powerful. It will be interesting to see how they work out. I very much liked the look of Frank Noble's dog (although it didn't show a lot of footage) and would be interested to find out the breeding behind him.
Possibly running open trialling dogs on more than 20 ewes for a start ! You don't get to work a larger packet of ewes except at the Nationals & International & a lot of trialling dogs aren't the most brilliant with a big flock(IMHE anyway)They seemed to rush the whole thing & keep the dog a bit too close for me There was an awful lot of editing so you didn't actually see all the runs & Driving a large packet of ewes is an art form at trials ! Not just for the dog selected at random, at the Nationals & Internationals the Driving Championship is selected from the dogs with the best points on for driving of course It was my Glen's forte driving large packets from low to high ground & back again !
I agree with your highlighted comment, especially if the dogs are being purely trained as trials dogs, rather than every day work dogs as well, they never get to see more than a handful of sheep. Have you any photos of Glen (especially worky ones) - I would love to see them. What was his breeding? Is he the dog that you qualified for the English National? Did you run him?
I've only got hard copy photos of him as it was back in the early 1980's Never got the nerve to run him at the English I'll have to have a dig through the albums, bit difficult to work him & take photos !
Have you had a chance to scan any piccies in yet Dyane? I agree it isn't easy to work a dog and take photos - but I took these whilst training Moss alone ... not great, as the sheep almost trip you up
