    Hi,

So very sorry to hear your GSD was poisoned. Am very pleased he's on the mend now though. How is he doing? Is he back at work with you or is he going to retire completely now and have a rest after his recovery?

Your mali will be a whole different ball game to your GSD, particularly if he is 1/2 dutch shepherd. In my experience (which is extremely limited and based on family members owning both of these dogs separately) these dogs need a lot more stimulation and will take up ALL of your time if you allow them to.

Having said that, aren't they fantastic when they are so eager to learn and will do absolutely anything for you? That is, unless he's going through a "kevin" stage right now.

Do you or are you only going to do the security type training with your pup, or are you going to train in other areas too? The reason I ask is that I have just started my big GSD on his obedience with a view to following through with protection/bite work (if he's good enough) at a later date. I've had loads and loads of excellent information and advice from Smokeybear who has trained her dogs to a very high level.
So I suppose my point is this (after all that waffling)......... if you want to do something similar but different with your pup (he can always just do the obedience of you prefer to ensure the level of control etc) I'd ask Smokeybear about the best way to go or what your options are (Sch, WT, Mondioring etc)

Anyway, after much waffling, I'm pleased your GSD is on the mend and hope he makes a full recovery very soon. Am also very pleased you have a pup who wants to work (some dogs just don't want to) and I'm sure you'll both be very successful with your working partnership.

    Good luck and take care,

    Laura xx

??? your post doesn't make sense are you saying your working dog was poisoned because he/she was mentioned on here ??

How can you puppy be a Malinois if it's part Dutch Shepherd ? It is a cross breed if there is any other breed in it's pedigree

Sorry your dog was poisoned my dogs are all trained not to eat anything they find & only if I am there, if food is given by someone I do not know/trust they are traught to refuse

I think the term you are looking for is "Non Compliance Dog" which is a subtle but important difference from a "non compliant" dog! ;)

I'm intrigued by the choice of crossing a dutch shep with a Maliniois. I would think the appeal of the Mali is trimline yet powerful design, speed, agility, power in a smaller package. Aren't Dutch herders more stocky/solid dogs like GSD's but with more drive (I may be completely off, correct me if I'm wrong) I guess I just don't see the benefit of crossing the two I guess. I've seen both working (only seen a dutch working in videos mind) and they seem to have very different style to them, not necessarily complimentary? Am I making sense?
I'm not having a go, just genuinely curious. Genetics is fascinating to me. I'm well aware many working breeds are crossed currently and make fantastic versatile working dogs.

I believe there is a lot of crossing back and forth with dutchies and mals? I don't know that much about either breed but know many who call a dutchie a stripey mal. Some are stockier but not all, O think it depends what has been mixed in. I have heard there is a lot of forged pedigrees in both breeds...

Have seen pure bred Hollandse Herders, and Malinois and the only thing that appears to differentiate them is the stripes both in the UK and in Holland in the KNPV etc.

ok hear is my reply,i have had a fair few dogs i have trained as working gun dogs never have i had the pleasure of training a" MALI CROSS" if that is now he is called his willingness to please is second to none i think and( i am sure i will be proved wrong) he is already at gold level kennel club training standards i am now wondering what i will benifit by doing the training courses? He does have some bad habbits like trying to dominate my 50kg working dog and when excited he will jump and snap in the air around 6 inches away from my face i am 6ft 1ns but only when walking with our other three dogs and my wife when i walk on my own with the dogs he is fine
