Teenytiny :) if you stop your puppy from biting too soon it will never learn to develop a 'soft mouth' and this is essential for bull breeds so that if your dog is ever provoked into biting for any reason it will do no harm . You have a very small window of time to teach this before your puppy develops the strong teeth and jaws of an adult dog. I will post the link again in case you missed it the first time when I posted in the nipping thread ..go to where it says 'click here' in the post ...

It takes a little time and effort to teach this but it is well worth it .

I know what you mean :D

Our AB is 75% Hines/25% Johnson.

Here's some photo's of the daft brush

I think I should just point out for the benefit of new owners, these are not normal run of the mill dogs and should not be treated as so, not an easy breed to live with for the first time owner some AB's are highly charged, highly strung and do have massive prey drives especially those from working AB lines.
She is as 'daft as a brush' with kids although after four years of living with her she's only just started to settle down with my cats rather than seeing them as something on the dinner menu or things that she can play roughly with!!
She went through a stage of wreaking havoc on the house which cost a few thousand to put right, I just had to find a happy meduim with her and find a way of channeling her masses of energy and that drive she had. She loves Flirtpole, A-Frame, and the Springpole she also looks a very promising candidate at wieghtpull (I've only recently started to do this with her) she's a happy dog but certainly not one that you could take you eyes off for a second (the term eyes up your backside is a famous saying in this house) she has masses of energy and has been a very loyal and true dog to her people and she and the little one have a very special bond and have done since the day she was brought home as a pup.
I think the reason many AB's are starting to flood rescue centres is because their owners have just treated them as a normal dog - easy mistake to make if you don't know an awful lot about them and a mistake I will admit that I made with mine.
I took her in as a very sick puppy who almost died, without knowing an awful lot about AB's - infact I knew nothing but being as I have always owned large Molossers I thought I was ready for that AB experience  How wrong was I - she's been far from an easy dog to live with but I never gave up on her as I said I've now found that 'happy medium' with her and she's now a pleasure to live with, it's just took four years to work out the way she thinks and what drives her

The easiest way of saying it is they are just different strains of American Bulldog, the most well known Strains are probably the Johnson (which is considered the Classic Bully type) and the Scott Type which is considered to be the Standard performance type which decend from farm utility and catch dogs.

There are two other Strains which are Hines & Painter which are both considered to be performace American Bulldogs.

I don't have any photo's of a Painter Strain AB but you could look up a dog called 'Painters Zeke' whom is quite a well known Painter dog.

You can get pure Billy Hines bred American Bulldogs although I doubt you would find many in the UK and those that are, are more than likely imported dogs.
