So far we (between ourselves) we have distinguished quite a few types of GSD.

    (in No particular order!!! )

    *Show line German Breeding

    *Show line English Breeding

    * Mix between the too (not sure if these are shown or not)

    * working continental dogs (very high drive)

    *Obedience lines.

Wow Suze, I bet when you first posted this thread you never expected all this!!!:smt002

My first love was German Shepherds and there will always be a special place in my heart for them.

I used to do agility with my boy Jasper, he was lightening fast around it too (and did working trials training with him too). He was superb, a great all-rounder. His lines were an English/German mix. Only major prob we had was he turned fear-aggressive after two consecutive dog-attacks (this could happen to any breed of course)

He was much easier to train than any Rott I've had, he was much less dominant and stubborn than any of them. (though have to admit Marius is the least dominant of the three I have owned bless him!) He was exceedingly loyal and a fab dog whom I adored. Of course I could buy another one with English/German lines and he may be the opposite, who knows!!

Marius loves to work and do obedience also, but he is completely different to train.

I think the advice given to go to shows, obedience comps etc is a great one. You will soon build a picture of which type suits you and if they are the right dog for you too. It will give you chance to chat to breeders and owners before making any decisions.

Good luck in whatever you decide:grin:

I've posted them before but in case anyone hasn't seen him, here is what Jasper looked like

well have just spoken to the mother.....

she has said shes not a fan of gsd's BUT i will change her mind lol!! obviously i have to wait until i am a bit more financially secure ( i have enough for the upkeep every week for all my animals - horse, dog n hammys) but the initial buying of it will be an issue until after next month....!!

then the search is on!!!!!!

sorry bc's but i think its time for a change in breed..!!! so any shows coming up - expect me to be there lol!!! watching all you guys with gsd's - so if a mad girl wanders up with a springerx - it will probably be me!!! haha!!

The breeder of my GSD has competed in many agility events and did recommend us having a bitch for agility as they are lighter on their feet, Harry was just too perfect to turn down and he is very clumsy so don't think agility will be his 'thing'. I have read that rottweillers are stubborn, GSD's on the other hand are only too happy to oblige.

yeh - i actually prefer bitches - but we alreadyhvae 2 and 1 dog - and imo i think a dog would balance things out - i know the character of my dogs so - dog it is lol!!

it was a toss up between a gsd and a collie - but sadly looks like we will loose one of them sooner than we thought so it would be totally unfair on my mum to get another now - it too hard - so a differnt breed altogether is what we need imo....

Sorry to hear that, hope your dogs health does improve. I wanted a golden retriever as we had one in UK but it was my husbands choice this time. I'm not complaining as Harry is perfect but he already weighs 39kg and he's only 9 months old so he doesn't make a good lap dog, unfortunately nobody seems to be able to explain that to him!!

Can I ask if any gsd owner's use a dog scooter to exercise your dogs?

If no-one uses a scooter with their gsd's, does anyone run them attached to a bike with a springer attachment or similar?
    Anyone?
