Hope nobody minds me posting these under this thread as well as the ordinary thread for photos?

Jasper was my beloved GSD, we had him until he was just over eight years old. He sadly got PTS about 3yrs ago as he had CDRM which left his back legs useless:-(

Jas was a fabulous all-rounder, agiltiy, showing, obedience and working trials, he had numerous trophies and rosettes to his name. But he was always my champion anyway:grin:

He was a wonderful dog, very intelligent, loyal and obedient, I miss him greatly:-(

What a magnificent example of this breed your Jasper was, a very handsome lad. How sad you lost him so young:-(

Thanks Helena, he was admired by people a lot, he was a fab dog.

We did have him until he was eight so I guess that is more than some people have theirs, but it was too short a time, Even though it was 3yrs ago we lost him, it feels like yesterday.

It is surprising how many peoples shepherds get CDRM:-(

Yes Ozzymom, I must have been very lucky indeed, as all my old girls lasted up to 16, and all being able to get in and out of the garden at that ripe old age! A couple of them had no probs whatsoever. Cassie and Georgie are making up for that now though with all their problems:-(

I'm not surprised you had many compliments about Jasper, and what a clever lad he was too throughout his short life.

    Hello everyone
Unfortunately I do not have a dog although my daughter aged 9 would dearly love one, her mother says NO!
Last night we watched K-9 'Jerry Lee' on SKY and she thought it was brilliant ,I'm basically just surfing the net looking for pictures and trivia on this wonderful alsatian dog.

Hi Paul, glad you popped in here then on your travels:grin:

You can't go far wrong if you decide on a gsd if and when you get a dog. So loyal and loving, a real "people" dog, very protective of you and everything that goes with you, I think they would even die for you if that's what it took to protect you. Wonderful, faithful companions, and soooooo intelligent you forget they're dogs sometimes!

My very first dog was a very very (I cannot emphasize this enough) poorly bred GSD named Max. He was an amazing dog! He had chronic skin allergies and ear infections to the point that by the age of ten, his ears went floppy due to multiple recurrent hematomas. He was also a GIANT GSD. I believe the breeder was breeder for larger than life Shepherds, hence all of Maxs problems. He wieghed in at 130 pounds and you can see from the pics how tall he is compared to a grown woman! (Me at age 19)
Max despite his overgrown-ness never knocked me over or pulled me down. He was a great kids dog. He loved to play basketball with us, run after us when we rode our bikes, go swimming with us, and just hang out in front of the TV with us. He was the best introduction to dogs a kid could have asked for. I lost him several years ago, but I still miss him terribly. I would love to have another someday!

he reason, given in most literature, that whites are undisirable is that the dog would not show up with the sheep. Here in the UK whites & longcoats can be registered & could enter a show but they would not win or be placed so they don't but they have their own society & hold companion shows with their own classes. The long coat is a throw back to one of the dogs Von Stephanitz used to get the type he wanted. There are very few litters born with no long coats in

Sadly I do not know how to post pictures, but I have had GSDs all my life. My current one Dax is beautiful. He is 11 & I've only had him since Christmas. I had just lost my show bitch Anni & I was surfing the net & saw him on the GSD rescue website. He is a lovely old boy & at the moment we are practising for our bronze good citizens award. Have ny of you taken these tests with your dogs?

    Aww he sounds great :)

My GSD bitch , Flame, passed her bronze GC at 6 months and her silver at 9 months old. She was ready for her gold at 12 months but unfortunately our training club didn't run the gold.

    Good luck with it.

Awwwww what a lovely old boy your Max was, I just love him in that last pic!!!! Awwwww. My white longcoat Georgie, weighs in at 50kgs. so he's pretty big too! You CAN feel his ribs, so my vet is happy with his weight, but would like me to get a couple of kgs. off him. My black longcoat although the same height as the white one, is much finer boned and weighs in at 39kgs.

Many years ago, I had a massive FEMALE gsd, who would have dwarfed even Georgie, she was really magnificent, a bit like your Flame Moobli in coat and markings, and then again I had a very small shortcoated dog, which was only half the size of both of mine now. Just goes to show how they can differ so much in size. That's all I wanted to say really, plus of course I fell in love with your old Max!

Re: whites, they are not readily visible in snow covered terrain, sheep respond better to coloured dogs and as a guard dog it is too visible at night, although a white dog would be good for livestock protection as it blends in with the sheep.
Coats: the normal coat is dominent to the long coat, you have normal coats, normal but carrying the longcoat gene and long coats. Approx 10% are born long or semilong, to get longcoats you either need to breed from longcoats or with normal coats that carry the LC gene, if you breed two normal coats that dont carry the LC gene then all pups will be normal coats.

That's very interesting about the coats. We searched and searched when we bought Cassie, as I do prefer the longcoated variety, to me, and it's only my personal opinion and experience, they seem to have a nicer temperament? Although we went to numerous breeders stating they had a longcoat and as you know, it is very, very difficult to tell at such a young age whether or not they are going to turn out to be a longcoat, when we first saw Cassie, we knew instantly she was going to be longcoated, coz her fur was 3" long at 10 weeks old, and she was just a big fat round ball of fluff, awwww I remember it well! It took a good 3 months before she even resembled a gsd, and because I hadn't received her papers by then I don't mind admitting I was getting very worried! Not that I would have parted with her by then of course! We also thought her colour and markings were very different, but a lot of black/sable dogs all have identical markings to her which I find quite strange? There is a dog not far from us, who is identical to her colourwise and actual markings, and yet these are not true gsd colours are they? I would be interested to know about this too if you can enlighten me please!
