I have just arrived home after enjoying a delish king prawn biryani. As a non meat eater, I couldn't imagine life without seafood, but I suppose they are a little insect-like, with their external skeletons. I just hope they freeze them into a stupor before boiling them!

Not wanting to go into details, but seafood like prawns and lobster etc, are not permitted, as are certain fish [halibut for example] because all seafood must have fins and scales. Insects and other things that crawl on the earth are also not permitted.

The same with meat. Only an animal that chews the cud and has cloven hooves is permitted.

Those are the easiest explanations I can think of at gone midnight!

Aren't there a few permitted insects? Such as locusts? And isn't feathered fowl that isn't a raptor permitted?

See my message #18 regarding some types of locusts.

True, raptors are forbidden, as are some birds [grouse and pheasants etc] which are killed by being shot or being brought down by raptors. But chicken, turkey, duck and suchlike are permitted if they are killed according to Kashrut. The thing is that they have to be without flaws [like permitted animals] but unlike Halal we do not have to say a prayer beforehand, and no animal or bird can be killed for food within sight of others.

I am sorry this thread seems to have gone a bit off topic so I am only quoting basic laws of Kashrut. But as I said once, on Dogsey a long time ago, I have been to slaughter houses and seen for myself how the animals and birds are treated and then dispatched.

And I still eat meat and poultry.
