To be honest you couldn't really go wrong with either a well bred show English Cocker or Springer, the working type are something else entirely, but I'm guessing they wouldn't be a lot of good for the grooming side of it! I would always go for a Springer, for obvious reasons lol, but I do think there's a lot more hair on the show Cocker than Springer hence there will probably be more grooming involved. That said, with you being based in the States there may not be a lot of difference as the show Springer is a lot more "showy" in the USA than here in England. If I were you I'd visit a few breeders of both breeds, pick the breed that suits you and from there pick a good breeder with dogs of the temperament you're looking for. It does well to remember you're going to have to live with that "temperament" for 15 years. If you're lucky!
I have a solid black show Cocker he is fab we go to 2 training classes a week one for just Agility and one for obedience and fun agility he is always off lead, and has a 90% recall he love it at the groomers and has never snapped at her i keep him in full coat but he is clipped not stripped he comes to work with me every day ( i work in an office) we also won the Christmas party fancy dress comp i don’t think you can judge on one persons experiences you could go to http://http://www.cockersonline.co.uk/discuss/index.php
