Soon to have the sibe reintroduced Breeder from down south contacted a friend of mine last week and asked her if she would consider letting her boy be used. The reply mail started with 'Considering I work for Sibe Welfare..........' ;-) I know Ute breeders in Scotland have found sibe owners willing to let their dogs be used. Sure they will all be stunning examples of the breed proven on the trail and in the show ring..........NOT! They should hang their heads in shame. Sorry for going OT. Take care. Seoniad.
So how do they justify crossing back to the Sibe when the 'breed' standard claims (or atleast it used to) that Ute's can be excercised off-lead?:? I own 2 of these dogs and love them with a passion but I just don't get it :? Thinks it's time people stopped messing.
I really don't understand it myself to be honest :? A decision was made not to reintroduce the sibe because of lack of recall and blue eyes. A few months later the sibe was back in the breeding programme because of it's 'clever and intelligent' nature. Nothing to do with it's looks of course as usual The whole 'breeding programme' (and I use that term loosely) beggars belief! Take care. Seoniad.
Good to hear your recent dogs have been rescues, good on yer Two of my last three were also rescues. You say Ben is the son of Hal. Did you use Hal as a stud then or did he come to you as a rescue having been previously used as a stud? I'm just curious to know how the litters were advertised if you believe him to be part wolf? I always thought Hal was Ute so were his pups registered Ute then?
It could be for health reasons. Some are of the opinion that there aren't enough healthy lines, diversity or their particular group don't have access to others so they are using current dogs to re-cross with founder breeds. I'm surprised if any owners of top notch, healthy Sibes would allow their dogs to be used in a cross - I thought that would be a big no-no for them.
Your right, no reputable sibe owner with respect and understanding of the breed will let their dogs be used. The Siberian Husky is in crisis welfare wise (as sadly are so many other breeds). And now being used yet again to try and create another wolf lookalike type. I'd love to hear the sibe owners justification for letting their dogs be used. Although nothing they said would ever convince me. Hope Loki is doing well Take care. Seoniad
Thanks - he's doing well. He had a cluster of fits recently but had gone over a year fit-free. It was the health issues mainly and then the reality of trying to bring in other breeds that caused me to feel the way I do now. Oh and the determination of some to continue breeding regardless. That doesn't mean I love my boy any less - he is Loki and I think the dogs are lovely - none of the cr*p surrounding them is their fault.
Couldn't agree more. I feel the same about badly bred sibes pumped out for profit. All of the guys I live with now are adopted having gone through welfare. All bred by back yard breeders. Sorry to hear that Loki had another cluster of fits. A year inbetween is wonderful He's a beautiful lad. Isaac had a fit two weeks ago. Mild and he was back to full zoom soon after. Hoping for another fit free year for Loki Take good care and give him a hug from me please. Seoniad.
In principle it would for sure. I'd still like to listen to their justification. I doubt they would ever come forward though. Take care. Seoniad.
Hug given and very much appreciated. In fact, I can't get his chin off my thigh! Thank you for the good wishes - I understand how you would feel with the sibes. I'm sad to hear Isaac had a fit but I know how brilliant it feels when they recover.
We all had to ... you just could not walk into the local pub and when asked what your dog was say "he is a wolf cross". Some did - and lost their dogs. I know the truth, and that's all that matters. You would have had to know Eddy to know, I'm afraid.
and thats whats oh so convenient bout the whole thing ;-) no real proof or truth from start to finish..which i hope for all the dogs involved sake ,is soon :-(
We bought Hal as a pup from Eddy Harrison. Hal sired 2 litters. Neither were advertised, they were sold by the respective breeders mainly to friends who expressed interest. We had very little to do with the sale of either litter, but especially not with the second. The owners of Skye lived down near Southampton and we live in Northamptonshire. Hal was not a registered Utonagan. In the days when it was illegal to own a wolf cross, we would call him a utonagan for want of a better description, although when we were well away from home with no risk of being traced, we would be more verbose about his true make up.
Luckily ... or unluckily, depending on your slant ... looks can be 1) deceiving and 2) not everything. If Hal had looked as wolfy as he really was, we would never have been able to keep him.
Yeah, I guess so. You will just have to take my word for it, I care not either way, having known Eddy over a long period of time, she really was 1 in a million. Not perfect by any chalk - she became over-dogged, and of course in such circumstances it is always the dogs that suffer the most. But she knew her dogs. Before she got involved with wolf crosses, she used to breed GSDs, Mals, Sibes and I believe at one time was involved with dobermans, but I may be wrong on that score. She had her faults, but she was a very dear friend of mine, although I only actually met her a few times in person, probably around 8. We would have hours long conversations on the phone, and they felt like minutes. It is not a question of convenience, it is just plain impossible to prove whether a wolf cross is a wolf cross or not, simply because dogs and wolves are the same species so therefore it can only ever be summise when you get past the obviousness of a pure wolf or an F1. We live next door to a male and female GSD, and the female is more wolfy than an F1 I know.
I don't think anyone can say for sure if there was any wolf in Eddies dogs. So many people say they knew her well, and some say there was no wolf and some say there was. Some say they saw them others say she had none. So who do we believe? Eddie kept no real pedigrees as such just a mish mash of names. Having seen pics of her founder dogs IMO there is no wolf in them at all. Eddie has taken the real information to the grave with her, bless her. Some people like the drama of my dog has wolf in its blood and become blinkered to the truth. Just my opinion.;-)
... around what time was she breeding sibes?what was her affix?.. as im sure your aware ,sibes havnt actually been here that long..and the history is very traceable .
