One thing about Eddy was that she bred healthy dogs. They might have been kept in less than ideal conditions - I certainly would not describe them as terrible, but they certainly were not good. However, the dogs were healthy, they had good hips, Hal's were brilliant, 6 on both sides, a good even score.
I can't help but notice that you have a Rhodesian Ridgeback, from your avatar? Lovely dogs, but like most pedigrees, flawed because of inbreeding. And I didn't condone inbreeding - I have repeatedly said I did not approve at all, but Digit, the bitch who was put to her father, was not in Hal's lines, so I was not buying an inbred dog. Look at the pedigree if you have it of your rhodie, and there will be far far more inbreeding in his or her ancestry than there will be in Eddy's with just the TWO close matings, out of the tens or hundreds of litters she must have produced. Hal came from good lines, as his healthiness proved.
amazing you know all that about a person you met how many times was it 8? and talked on the phone to...blind faith eh? oh so theres documentation of hip scores is there? that would involve paper and keeping records
Heather & Zak : I suggest you take the mote out of your own eye before attempting to take the beam out of mine, matey! You have a king charles - dogs who are so inbred, poor things, that their brains are too big for their skulls, causing them untold pain. Thousands upon thousands of father/daughter, mother/son, brother/sister matings will have gone into your breed, not just 2!
Eddy NEVER bred aggressive dogs, and I never said she did!! The story that Were Wolf was referring to I must say I didn't know about or had forgotten, but IMO it is a load of tosh. Eddy bred healthy, very well socialised and friendly dogs. I met many of them of course over the years, and they were all gorgeous. You mustn't listen to jealous rumours m'dear, I can assure you I NEVER met a dog at Eddy's, or a dog she had bred for that matter, that I would not allow my daughter to go in with. They were all lovely natured animals.
Because most of what is said about Eddy is a load of tosh, that's why!! You are just listening to rumours that are promulgated as fact. Some of it is true - but most of it is utter cr*p! The story about chucking live puppies down the well is just absolute nonsense! You only have my word for it of course, so as I said to Tupacs in an earlier posting, I could be lying too, I realise that, but only I know that I am telling the truth!
Quite long enough to form an opinion of someone. We must have talked for a hundred hours on the phone, if not more. I have many good friends around the globe who I have only met once or twice, so what?
Thanks Gnasher - I didn't mean the report Werewolf was referring to but when you said what I've copied below:
I don't know if it is true (it is from The People'), but I am thinking there must be some truth to it as it mentions a child getting attacked and the names etc of the people who owned the dog: http://www.highbeam.com/doc/1G1-61156890.html
My boy has no repeated names in his pedigree. His parents have good hips and he is a very healthy boy. They are a very natural breed with no exagerations, bred for speed, stamina and their hunting ability. There is more scientific research available so there is more understanding about their ridge, also dermoid sinus' can be operated on successfully meaning the dogs make a full recovery. So your argument doesnt really stand, that was then this is now. As for Eddy, 2 close mating that you know of..................can you state catagorically there were no more?
How I know it is most likely tosh is simply because when we finally after a long 5 year wait were told by Eddy that she was breeding a suitable litter, Mike threw himself, as is his wont, into doing intensive research regarding wolf crosses. Of course he ended up on american sites, America having the largest population of wolves and wolf crosses, and he could not find one instance of a wild wolf, or indeed a domesticated one, EVER killing or attacking a human being. He found one story where a wolf, believed rabid, had attacked a railway worker who was working in the snow on a remote part of railway track. The railway worker beat him off with his shovel. I can't remember the statistics now, but Mike had got various charts and tables of dog attack stats. in the States, and a pit bull was something like 2,000 times more dangerous in terms of biting humans than a wolf cross, next was the GSD at 1,000 times more dangerous, and so the list went down and down. This was worked out statistically because of course there were far far fewer wolf crosses in the States than there were GSDs or pitbulls. In this country, going back centuries to when there were wild wolves here, there are NO RECORDS WHATSOEVER of wolves killing grannies or babies, it is all myth promulgated by the Church ... the wolf being the devil incarnate. It didn't help the poor wolf of course when man began to farm, and enclose land, and the wolves would help themselves to easy meals! I am not saying by any manner or means that the story of Jaye isn't true, but the stories of wolves being so dangerous is absolute tosh and the stuff of fairy tales!
It is true that dermoid sinus can be operated on, but it doesn't change the fact that 5 in 100 ridgies suffer from it - that's 5%. That sounds like a serious health problem to me. I would be appalled frankly at odds like that - I bet you cannot get insurance to cover the cost of the operation, which again I bet is horrendously expensive! I am not criticising you, I think your breed are absolutely gorgeous, we have several round here and they are lovely dogs, I am just stating fact. And no I can't categorically state that Eddy only did 2 close matings, can you categorically state that there are no repeated names further back in your dog's pedigree than you may have access to? And can you also stake your life that those records are accurate?
Yes I know all about it, but I don't walk around wearing rose tinted glasses. Breeders that do it are despicable and I would not touch them with a barge pole unlike you have done. How do you know what lines Hal came from, you are not even sure of the mothers name. Yes written on a piece of paper by yourself. Just carry on in your fantasy world.
In this country there is no recording system for DS so I dont know where you got your figures from? I researched the breed and didnt forgo my morals to get wolfie looking dog.
Was googling to find out more about dermoid sinus, and came across this little gem on Wikipedia: "The Chairman of the Rhodesian Ridgeback Club stated that she considered ridgelessness a genetic fault. The ridge is a genetic trait, the presence of which is claimed to make the dog more prone to suffer from dermoid sinus. The programme mistakenly claims that the ridge itself is a mild form of spina bifida. (See below) One in twenty puppies are born ridgeless. A section of the code of ethics of the Rhodesian Ridgeback Club was shown to state that "Ridgeless puppies shall be culled." When asked about the practice of culling healthy puppies, Kennel Club chairman Ronnie Irving denied knowledge of such practices and said that they were not acceptable. It was shown that after the interview, the Kennel Club wrote to the Rhodesian Ridgeback Club condemning the practice and requested that the club review their code of ethics. The breed club said that the Kennel Club knew about the code of ethics, as they have to be ratified by the Kennel Club every year." O how very nice too: makes all the shinanigans with BI's, NI's, BUI's etc. pale into insignificance really. And you call me a hypocrite!!
