One thing to bear in mind is that a good couple of the breeds mentioned on this thread are not particularly high in numbers. Working bred Clumbers, for example, are very difficult to get hold of. I looked into working type Clumbers and the litters are few and far between with big waiting lists. German Wirehaired Pointers are also trickier to find than their Shorthaired cousins.

I've actually just had a look at the puppies registered for 2009, which was quite interesting. Brittany's had 80 pups registered, Spinones had 379, Large Munsterlanders had 140, Slovaks had 68, Clumbers had 211...all fairly low numbers, especially when compared to a rather worrying 40,000 Labradors!

So basically, plan WELL ahead if you want something 'different'. :)

I don't think I will be getting a new dog, until next year or the year after, I've got too much training still to do with Misty and Blade and want to get them as near perfect as I can! I think it will more than likely be the year after next, as OH and I may move back down South next year, jobs depending.

This is why I want to do my research and see what breed I really do like!

Looking at those Brittany figures, now wonder I cant find any from good breeders, cant even find any from bad breeders! There are actually a litter of working line Clumbers advertised in my local free ads paper...Weird.

Um they actually aren't that hard to find, I own one of these Britbags, their are numberous good breeders located all over the country who would be tripping over themselves to get their dogs into the hands of keen shooting folk. Just go on the Brittany Club of GB, they have all the breeders listed on there, just click on the link to their website.

Probably worth just saying though that these dogs are uncommon for a reason, they are alot of hard work more so than most other breeds, most shooting folk prefer a german HPR as they are more steady than these little cannonballs ;)

Just edited to say that u may have to wait for a pup as breedings are carefully planned in advanced - good luck in your search

I'm not ready for a Brittany yet, got enough on my hands training one gundog, especially with me being a novice. It's a shame i'm not ready actually as there is a gorgeous tri coloured dog from the Bryantscroft kennels who isnt spoken for

When the time is right i'll have my name on a list, got a couple of top kennels in mind but having experience with German pointers (GSP, GWP) there isnt much else gundog wise that can surely be as challenging!!?

Thanks for your advice. Have you posted any pics of your Brittany?

Spanish Water Dogs good little workers and quite a few being trained in the gundog world at the moment and surprising the trainers!

Socialisation at a young age is a must though!
