A warm welcome to you Wolfdog owners

I think I'm going to have to move out of this country. I love wolfdogs, and anything to do with wolves. I'd have a wolf/wolfdog in a heart beat

I visited a woodland park last week, and had a talk about european wolves. It's made me even more determined to have a wolfdog. Two of the wolves (Nadja and Mishka) are hand reared and have no fear of humans. They even come up to the fence and wag thier tails when you call thier names :smt049 :smt049 I wanted to skip the fence and stroke thier noses :smt049

Right! Very unsuitable dogs, indeed, Jiri! I will support you and add some more photos. ;-)

This is my Ali with my cousin Vitek. She saw the kid first time ever, but they enjoyed themselves quite well. Note the boy smiling like crazy..

On this photo, my sister is getting big kiss from my friends CSW. She and the dog did not know each other, but he said big hello anyways

    And a few more photos.

On this one, Ali decided that Vitek needed protection and a bodyguard, so she volunteered and went to lay down next to him to watch over him. ;-)

Here´s another one from the pool.

And finally, one funny picture - Cira, my older female and Vitek. "My, what big teeth you have!" But.. which one? 8)
(There is a bit of Photoshop on this picture, for obvious reasons I did not want to post picture of totally naked child on the net..).

Ailsa, I do understand your arguments emotionally, but not intellectually - by following your way of thinking one'd have to come to a conclusion that many other breeds would have to be immediately banned not only from the UK, but also all over the world since it happens that dogs are abused by mean or stupid people everywhere. Why not put a ban on cars, since there are many stupid people who drive too fast or aftre drinking.
I don't get why you consider the British to be less responsible than populations of other countries. And if this is the case why risk lives of any dogs of any breeds or expose them to abuse and maltreatment?

I will repeat what I said earlier: not only in the UK live people who are fascinated by the prospect of owning an "almost a wolf". There is nothing wrong with it as long as the dog is well socialised, trained and looked after and the owners are fully aware that they own dogs (which look very much like wolves), but not wolves. Many macho type men live in Italy where there is a significant population of czechoslovakian wolfdogs and ...nothing happens.
I know a few owners of CSVs who travel with their pets everywhere, even take them to work and have the "walking with a wolf" image. But does it really differ much from the "walking with a mastiff" or "walking with a pit-bull" images? I believe it doesn't, unless someone suffers from the Little Red Riding Hood complex

It also sounds a bit humorous to me that from what you write linguistics is to be blamed for the ban. If the English are so sensitive to terminology why not try to register the breed under "Czechoslovakian "W"-dogs" or so and the problem is solved ;-)

As far as the discussion about CSVs as family pets is concerned see the following links:

    http://www.frey.com.pl/wilczak/index.php?wolfdog=wilczak-galeria

    http://www.wolfdog.no/galleri/galleriet.asp

And believe me, there are many more links available!!! CSVs are ordinary dogs - with specific features of character, like any other breed and relatively stable appearance (definitely more than Untonagans). They are probably healthier, stronger, more loyal, intelligent and wilful than other breeds, due to the input of wolf blood (50 - 30 years ago), but the whole early selection was oriented towards producing a WORKING BREED OF A DOG, NOT A 'TRAINABLE' WOLF.

Some photos from my Czech friend Hanka. :) Hanka owns several Czechoslovakian wolfdogs, is a responsible breeder and she loves to do winter sports with her dogs ;) Her children love the wolfdogs.

Just talking about the breeds openly like this is great, which is why I let the people on the wolfdog.org forum know we were having the conversation :)...

I wanted people who really know these dogs inside and out to come and talk about them, good and bad...but mostly to give us a real insight so people can go away with facts.

Whenever I am having a similar conversation I am going to remember this thread and direct people to read it also.

The Czechoslovakian and Saarloos Wolfdogs are pretty much unheard of here so the 'hard man' type that may be interested for the wrong reasons will see them as something 'underground' and appealing for the wrong reasons...To build awareness like this is great...I wonder how many 'hard man' characters would still be interested after reading and looking at the pictures in just this thread alone?...

Some great pics here

Lets hope one day the wolfdog will finally be accepted in the UK. They're stunning animals and to be able to read more and more about this breed gives people a better understanding of them

Lovely photos again, these dogs are just stunning - you must feel very proud to own them.

What sort of diet do you feed them?

and what are you saying?

seriously...the 'hard man' has to find out about the dogs from somewhere and while said 'hard man' is searching the internet which is where most people turn to now a days these threads do appear on search engines so in a way I hope it does help.

Since CSVs look very much like wolves, they often play wolves in films, advertisements and TV productions. If any of you happen to watch the new film with Val Kimler - a western, (or rather a parody of a western) entitled “Summer love” you’ll have an opportunity to see an episode with Balrog z Peronowki (owned by Margo and Przemek Peron) acting a wounded wolf. The film is to be shown for the first time at the International Film Festival in Venice which has just begun. Balrog was having a great time acting - running up and down the hill with a limp, but Margo enjoyed it less since after sveral shots she was all covered with artificial blood!

Ailsa, I really do understand you concerns, but a simple ban is not a good solution to any problem. Maybe education, maybe legal regulations which would put obligations on the owners and breeders (which also concerns other big breeds), but not a ban, especially in the era of globalisation. While living in a communist country my generation experienced lots of bans, but history shows, that such policy leads nowhere. A ban makes people feel treated by authorities like irresponsible kids and they sooner or later start investigating how to overcome it. In the end, it turns out that the situation gets out of hand. English people travel more and more often to the continent now (at the moment there are more British in the Main Market Square of my city than locals ) There is also a small number of British yobs here (as you put it;-) )
Lets's imagine that sooner or later they fall in love with CSVs - especially if they visit Prague or Bratislava and start importing the dogs to the UK as mongrels or use other tricks. Do you think this this would be a healtier situation than registration and reasonable control of the dogs?

As I said - I understand your reservations, buy I wanted to present you another (more central European ;-) ) point of view on the issue. In times of cheap flights, weekend tariffs, extended tourism, multinational businesses and more and more international cooperation, the UK will not be able to keep the "splendid isolation" attitudes much longer, not only towards CSVs but also other things.:)
