My paternal grandfather was from somewhere in Russia and was sent to England as a teenager by his parents when things were getting bad there. My paternal grandmother was from a little village somewhere outside Warsaw - wiped out during WWII - and she and a sister ? and some cousins ? were also sent to England when they were in their teens. They met in England, were engaged when he was 19 and she was 17 - I actually have the original engagement photograph. Not sure of dates but Father, their second born, was born in July 1909, All that has ever been known of their families is that they just vanished and presumably all went to the gas chambers during WWII. No way of really tracing them. I know various versions of surnames and have been to Yad Vashem http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yad_Vashem more than a few times to see if they have any records of them, but so many perished in the gas chambers and the families all had different - and unknown names, and the few names I did manage to have found were not listed in their records.
