Its sort of agility but without the vertigo jumps, seesaw & highbar walk thingy, there's just long jumps which span from 1 foot to 20 foot, 1 to 2 foot for toy breeds, 2 to 4 foot for small dogs so on. I saw a little butterfly dog do a 2 foot long jump with ease & an Collie 10 foot long jump, so I have enrolled Zeus in the beginners class, I think he will enjoy doing long jump as he as long lanky legs. Zeus Long jumps
Zeus is scared of the seesaw & the highbar walk, but loves doing agility, so when I saw the leaflets for new beginners long jump class, I went along with Zeus & he seemed to be enjoying the long jumps, so I enrolled him there & then.
He will love it! When Eddie was doing Working Trials, (he's 15 inches to the shoulder), his jumps were:- Clear jump, 2 feet, Long jump, 6 feet, Scale jump, 4 feet. If I called him in from the garden, he would sometimes jump the scale on his way in - just for fun. Tweed had to do the full height for dogs over 15 inches, Clear 3 feet, Long 9 feet. and a 6 foot scale. You do have to build up slowly though, to avoid failure or injury.
Zeus is 24inchs to top of his head, loves doing the long jumps, when he did agility it was the seesaw that scared him, it just froze when it moved & then he stopped walking on the highbar too but he fully enjoyed himself today, at the open day x
Oh Bless him. They measure the dog heights to the withers, like horses. It sounds as if Zeus had too sudden a start with the see saw. I had a wobble board for Ed when he was first starting to train, and we also went on a Confidence Day with a police trainer. He had drop boxes (you dropped cheese in, and they had to jump down to get it and to exit), swinging bridges that were only 2 or 3 inches from the floor, ladders, and lots of other things - I could bore you stiff!. Everything was taught so gently and gradually, and by the end of the day we were jumping through fire hoops - it sounds scary, but all the dogs did it without being fazed. Our trainer said it could be a valuable experience in case your dog ever had to face fire. I don't think I have many photo's from Ed's day - I'll have to look, but here is the end of Tweed's Confidence Day.
The seesaw was only 6inches off the ground vertigo jumps again 6 inches off the ground the highbar was 10inches off the ground but he just froze solid, so we use to just miss them out, during the beginners classes but he could not go onto the bigger vertigo jumps etc until he passed the beginners course so we left, but the long jump he did today he was running in circles doing funny little dances as soon as he cleared the jumps. think he enjoyed himself so much, the trainer there took Zeus round the course first on his lunge lead then let Zeus go on his own.
De Dawg sez ta muchly but the furthest she will jump is on or off the couch, recliner and her - no, not her, but my bed.
Too bad that Sophie has grown so dog aggressive, she would have been perfect for this!!! Just for her own amusement she'll jump a park bench one leap with no effort. In the house when she's happy she can spontaneously jump to shoulder height from standing...that's about five feet straight up. Perhaps she's an AmStaff/kangaroo cross?
