Why did the German Shepherd and the Belgian Shepherd become popular and not the Dutch Shepherd ??? And what kinda dog would you put on par with ? A working line GSD? A Malinois?? O and those who say they are not influenced by TV ,Yes i am asking this because of Hunter last night .....lol
The Hollandse Herder is akin to the Malinois, in fact there is a saying on some parts of the Continent, if they come out fawn they are Malis and if stripey they are HH. There are loads of similar breeds eg why the GWP and not the Korthals Griffon? Why the Large Munsterlander and not the Small one? etc A friend of mine has just got his TDex with his HH the first in the UK. Not so many HH are bred as BSD.
I have also heard pretty much that they are the same as a mal but with stripes! Not sure HOW true that is..but there seem to be a bigger variation in Dutchies, some definitely look like they have bullbreed mixed in. I prefer dutchies though, but I think I just like the stripes more than the fawn.
The Dutch and Belgian Shepherd dogs are basically the same and are sometimes interbred particularly Malinois x DS You may find this interesting : http://www.sevenpineskennel.com/dutch_shepherd_history.htm
I think the Dutch Shepherds/Hollandse Herders are a littler bigger than the Mals, with squarer faces too - least from what I've seen of them. Would be interesting to hear what people who have seen both side by side think - anyone know anyone who has? I would love a Dutch Shepherd, just my luck finding a breed I like that are not bred in the UK!
I have seen both, in the flesh, and a fair few of them. There is a wide variety of looks in both Malis and HH and sizes etc. Spock, who has just got his TDex is not dissimilar to the HH in the TV programme, however a few others I have seen are slighter of build. In Holland, you could put 12 of each next to each other and they would not look like peas out of a pod. As for not being bred in the UK, well Ian Walshaw no longer breeds them but there are some that are being bred but you just have to ask around, there are very few.
I have also seen both in the flesh side by side and the only real difference in the ones I have seen is the colour. I know someone who had just got a dutchie pup so yes they are bred in the UK. ;-)
Ooo interesting! Can you guys dig around and perhaps PM me some details please? I'd love to learn more Also, if you can get any pics of the ones you mention that would be awesome

I know a guy who has bred a litter before (he is near Edinburgh). His bitch has just been mated. If you were serious about a Dutchie pup I can put you in touch with this guy. You could also ask on the K9 Protection forum and/or the Pedigree Database forum. In fact you may be able to make contact through here, as he was a member a while back with a litter of DH pups ... http://www.dogsey.com/dog-blogs.php?t=108600 And some other photos of his lovely dogs here ... http://www.dogsey.com/showthread.php?t=114710&page=2 http://www.dogsey.com/showthread.php?t=113354
I'm not sure I'm ready yet, but no harm in enquiring... Thanks Murf - are they from here? http://www.workingdogsuk.co.uk What do you guys think? Anyone know anything about them? The contact details is for a 'Dr' :? http://www.workingdogsuk.co.uk/uploads/7/8/1/5/7815198/7759285_orig.jpg Look at the pups on the far left and far right Thanks Kirsty - do you know this breeder? His profile says he has 24 dogs :?
Have you got a link to their profile there Murf? Kirsty, from the threads you posted, this dog is a stunner Mal x Dutch
Ah right - that sounds positive then I PM'd him and he wants me to contact him via email, and wants to know if anyone he knows might know me - I said that might be possible I really don't know if I'm ready tho - ideally I'd want to see the dogs in person before making my mind up on the breed. Although I think I'd know instantly after meeting the parents - when I saw Rocky's dad and he looked me in the eye I knew that was the breed for me. Trust HH breeders to be so far up north!
