I would say Springer type dogs have floppy to prevent brambles from geting into ear when flushing out game
All about dogs that was on the BBC was fascinating. They said domestication occurred through selective breeding - in as little as, I think, 5 generations. Basically you start off with a few litters of wild animals, then, out of those you pick the ones that are the friendliest, and mate them. Then, from their litter you pick the friendliest again and mate them, and so on and so fourth. I think they showed a Dutch scientist replicate the process several times. Floppy ears were explained similarly, humans like the 'puppy dog' look and so replication through selective breeding occurred
