Yet a new behavior for Sophie, so full of nervous tics to begin with...Now if I'm on the computer she will stand against the desk or even against my back and paw n' squeal. Now this is sixty pounds of dog so you feel it. I've read that yelling at them encourages them to get louder. You're barking so they add to it. I'll turn and put her paws on the ground or try to find out what she wants. Mostly it just seems to be a bid for attention...Miss Poor and Pitiful, as if she doesn't have almost constant attention. Ideally what should my response be?
Will she not listen if you command her sit? So that she will stop doing the standing / leaning business. It's lovely how some are complete attention hounds lol
She's prob getting what she wants when you turn around - I would try to ignore, or, if I have to put her paws down, do so without speaking or making eye contact. Hopefully one of our more experienced members has some tips too.
She gets herself into the squealies and she won't sit down. I don't want to do tranks yet since she doesn't get like that all the time. Maybe put her down on the floor and a few minutes of attention and then go back to where I was? Or is that encouraging her more?
I think that would be encouraging her honestly. She wants attention and you give it to her so you will be conditioning her to keep doing the behavior as she gets rewarded.
When you find the answer please let me know as I have a 47 lb dog who hurls herself at my chair when she is in a demanding mood.
Yes Tina, that might work. It's a variation on the, Time Out, method. I use the down stay for that kind of behaviour, but it does take longer to establish. Start with a very short period, then reward, and release by using a release command (I say, Up, you get). Gradually increase the time, and always reward while they are still in the down position, or they soon learn to anticipate the release.
