I ran out to my car to get one book. I closed the porch door but not the front door. As I opened my trunk there was a young man walking a husky mix...and the porch door burst open. This is late night but still...Sophie has injured two innocent dogs and killed cats. Sophie I dragged in by the neck scruff. Callie, I'm blessed...he stood even with the young man's crotch but didn't do more than sniff him over and a quick sniff of his dog before following me back across the street. I went out after I secured the dogs and apologized all over the place. I hugged the poor pup in question and she seemed fine. The young man was so cool, he said he'd had a pit. When Callie was standing there he went completely submissive. Good because Callie knew no problem, now I listen to Mami...from now on the front door gets locked even for a second. Nights like this keep you on your toes. It's being a responsible dog owner.
My Jade broke a leash once and "mauled" a poodle. She was muzzled but tried with everything she had to kill the little dog. Sounded AWFUL with snarling and small dog yelping, but no dogs were truly injured. I rushed over and snatched her off by the harness. The ladies dog had charged us after his leash came from under the baby stroller she had it under. Jade reacted and her leash broke, they met in the middle. The lady was SO HAPPY that Jade was wearing that muzzle. Jade tried to kill that dog, pinned him down and was "ripping" at his neck. Anything can happen... such as leashes breaking all of a sudden or like with my last dog, small dogs outright attacking your large dog who is leashed properly (who of course will viciously maul the smaller dog). Always gotta stay on your toes. I apologized even though we were both equally at fault and Jade did no real harm thanks to her muzzle.
Sometimes things can happen which are out of our control but if you have certain breeds (or any dog that's killed before) you need to be vigilant. In some places if a dog kills it is PTS in other places if it attacks it's considered a dangerous dog which adds restrictions to your dog and the next time they will be PTS. Not all areas have the same laws and of course that's only if AC gets involved too but the next person might report it and cause problems. That's why I'm hyper vigilant I don't want my dog PTS or to be sued. I've never had a leash snap, I can't imagine. But I have had off leash small dogs go on the attack. Which is just as wrong, they are the ones likely to be hurt because of their size but the owner should still be more responsible. The issues I had with 2 different small dogs were NEVER contained. They had different owners but both just let them run free. They thought this was totally okay.
I'm just grateful, in a true emergency you have to think "What is the one thing that has to be done right this second?". The answer was Sophie has to be completely in my control. She's got tons of loose skin around her neck, don't know if she'd be docile with someone else grabbing her like that, but it got her out of harms way. Then second immediate issue, getting Callie to realize the young man is not any threat, his dog is not any threat, Sophie is stupid, just listen to me...and he did, such a good boy. Still a scary experience.
