Hi all , my jack russle puppy teddy is now 13 weeks old and has had all his injections . I was wondering how far I should be walking him if at all ? Some wed site say its 5 min per mouth of age so 15 mins where as others say you should just be playing in the yard with him till he is at least 4 months old im a bit confused can anyone help ???
Hello Sammy - I think that is 5 minutes per month being walked on a lead - playing free does not count. But Teddy does need to be out and experience the great outdoors, cars, trucks, people, other dogs etc so he is socialised. Is there anywhere you can walk him to and then sit down so he sees everything passing by? Playing in the yard is fine but to wait until he is four-months old to take Teddy out for walkies will not really help to get him socialised.
Hi Malak, thanks for the reply yeah we live in the county so theirs lots of places to take him I was just confused as to the advice I'd got from other web sites as to whether he could go out for a walk or not .
Its best not to walk young puppies on hard surfaces, far better to do 5/10min short walk sit on a bench or something and let him soak things in, put him in the car and go somewhere new for a sniff around and letting him play in garden, is plenty at that age. Mental stimulation will tire out a dog much quicker than physical exercise, short bursts of training ,sits, lie downs, stays ect: plus some fun games.
Of course Teddy can go out for a walk - the advice of 5 minutes walking on lead, on a pavement I think, for each month is what people here recommend. Take Teddy out, find somewhere to sit so he can watch the world go by and learn. He needs to see different thing while being secure on his leash with you. But of course he can have unlimited playing in a secure garden.
