I'm a newbie, this being my second post after my "hello" in the Intro section. Our Giant Schnauzer passed away this summer, not long before our twins left for their first year in college. I need a "little baby" to love (and love me back) in their absence. I've given this a lot of thought and would love a toy breed. (The Giant Schnauzer was my husband's decision many years ago.) My hubby is of the mind that all toy breeds are unable to be housebroken, only poodles are smart, they all yelp and bark, simply because he's used to larger breeds. I know he's wrong, but could use some supporting arguments! We trained our Giant Schnauzer well and I'm home most of the day, so I'm a very dedicated dog Mom. I'm continuing to do my research, but would love all suggestions for a toy breed. I prefer the look and behavior of flat-nosed breeds, particularly those with a "feminine" look, but I'll gladly listen to all suggestions. I need a little "baby"
Hi - Have you considered a rescue dog? There is a rescue that is dedicated to 'small' sized dogs of all breeds, and crosses! If you type in The Little Dog Rescue, you should get some info. If you are looking at getting a pedigree pup from a decent breeder then I think you would need to give a little more info about your self, and what sort of things you would expect a dog to be able to cope with to fit well in your home, for other members to put suggestions to you.
hiya, i have 4 small breed dogs,2 tibetan spaniels and 2 king charles spaniels (not cavaliers) and none of these do their toiletting indoors, even the 12 week old or my dog when the girls are in season.
if you like the look of schauzers ,maybe a griffon would be a good breed? they are quite hardy little dogs from what ive seen. i was a "big dog" person until i bought my first tib 8 yrs ago.we lost our dogue de bordeaux 2 weeks ago from a series of fits.ive decided i'll not have another, luckily i have the other dogs for company.
I haven't ruled out a rescue at all and will be sure to visit that site. Luckily we have a very home-like no-kill shelter near where we live and they often get in very loving dogs that have been given up for adoption because their owners died. Although I love that shelter, we also have "kill" shelters in town and I regularly visit them. It pains me to do so, as I know so many of them won't be adopted. There's a deluge of dogs in the "kill" shelter recently due to home foreclosures and owners not taking their pets with them. Tragic. I'll also try breed-specific rescues. As a child we had a rescue dog and it was the best dog I've ever had!
I have just seen your location is now USA, so Im afraid to say the rescue I mentioned will not be able to help you with your search . But good idea with looking into breed rescues and the like Good luck.
This is quite a coincidence, as my grandmother had a Tibetan Spaniel mix when I was a child and all the grandchildren and family doted over her (the dog and grandmom) ;-) I'm partial to Tibetan Spaniels and Japanese Chins, although they're very difficult to find where I live in the US and extremely rare to find as rescues. There aren't many dogs I don't like (Griffons and on and on), but I'm going to take my time in making my decision. As a true dog lover, it's easy to love every breed, mixed just as well, but I want to do this in a very intelligent manner. Since my last post, hubby has said he's leaving the decision up to me, but I'll be sure to discuss it well with him. Right now I'm trying to find more information on Tibetan Spaniels, Japanese Chin, and other similar breeds. Unfortunately, I know no one with one of these dogs, so I'm lurking here Thanks for your help! I'd love to see photos of your dogs. Have you posted photos before?
Hi, I'm new here & just saw you post I have a 12 yr old shih tzu. My aunt re homed her from a breeder when she was no longer considered useful for breeding (at the age of 4), & when my aunt died last year she bequeathed Sophie to me. Sophie is a very bubbly, happy go lucky, friendly affectionate little girl. She wants to please all the time, & loves a cuddle...not so keen on walks though! For a small breed, they are incredibly robust, & have a wonderful 'look at me' walk, full of attitude!!! I have to warn you that my bundle of joy snores like thunder, something to do with the short nose.
I have always had larger dogs whippets and greyhounds but have found myself this year with 2 italian greyhounds and to be honest both my OH and I are smittten with them. They can be delicate little dogs but do tend to be a bit manic more so with having 2 pups together. They are foster brothers the mother of one fostered the other litter. The smaller of the 2 Buck only came to us last week having stayed with his breederand has been handled and shown by her 6 year old son. They have a reputation for being hard to house train but I have found both mine easy to house train and both are clean in the house
Hoew about a Yorkie? tough as cookies for such a small sized dog (must be the terrier spirit!), very non-demanding in pretty much every respect and super affectionate.
Must admit, if i was going to get a toy breed, i'd go for a chinese crested I have one that stays in for day boarding with me and has done since he was 12 weeks old I think they have great little personalitys.
