The Great British Greyhound Walk is the brainchild of Janet Peacock founder of Greyhound Walks in Essex. The first Greyhound Walk was in April 2006 when 5 greyhounds and their families got together after a letter was written to the Braintree Times seeing local owners fancied a get-together. Numbers steadily grew and in August 2006 there was an enormous boost after the plight of ex racing greyhounds was highlighted nationally. Since then once monthly walks have progressed to twice monthly walks and in 2008 we're doing 3 walks each month. The number of dogs at each walk averages 60 and our record attendance was on 1st January 2009 when 128 dogs went walking.

Janet is being assisted in the organisation of the walk by Liz Cooper who has been involved in homing retired racing greyhounds for ten years and helps run the Harlow branch of the Retired Greyhound Trust.

The Great British Greyhound Walk is being held in association with Greyhound Walks and the Retired Greyhound Trust.

At 10am on Sunday 20th June 2010 organised Greyhound Walks will be held throughout the UK.
We're hoping to link up with organisations, kennels and individuals across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland to bring public awareness to Greyhounds as pets. It's planned that the scale of the project will attract public and media attention.

We have four different walk locations organised for Sussex which are:-

2. Buchan Park, Crawley
3. The Chattri, Patcham Nr Brighton

I've just found te email for the Oxford organiser, so will be emailing her, and me and the dogs will be planning to go along on the day and have a great time, Honey particulary has a liking for Greyhounds and other sighthound types, and we've never been able to participate in any walks like this before as I've never heard of any locally

ohhh would they mind a lurcher and 2 NI going along to the one in shropshire?

I think we will enjoy it, I've also just took the hounds out, and saw a lady walking her Greyhound that I know, and am going to print out the info that I got from a email from the organiser and drop it round hers too

The one in Oxford I got told is for Greyhounds and Lurchers only, but that may be up to each organisers discretion on what they allow

Be a part of the 2010 Great British Greyhound Walk!

What is the Great British Greyhound Walk all about?
It is an opportunity for owners around Britain to come together at simultaneous walks to celebrate retired racing greyhounds and raise awareness of their suitability as pets at a linked social event that could be developed in a number of ways.

• The start of a new social walking and owner support group.
• Part of a bigger fundraising day
• As a PR event to promote the homing of greyhounds
• Or just remain as a one-off event for a group of owners, large or small

When is it?
10am Sunday 20th June 2010

Where is it?
At as many locations as possible throughout Britain. This is where existing greyhound walking groups, Kennels, homing organisations and / or individuals can join in and run a walk as part of the GBGW.

How do we get involved?
If you already run greyhound walks and would like to have a walk as part of the GBGW then simply email us and we’ll let you know what information we need to register your walk with us. Once all the details are verified we will add your walk details to our website and provide you with any additional information you need to run a GBGW.

If you have never run a walk before but are interested then email us for our guidelines for running a walk and you can always contact us for further guidance.

GBGW GENERAL INFORMATION
Any walks that are part of the GBGW are subject to the following Guidelines and Rules

Guidelines
• The walk should be around an hour duration at a leisurely pace.
• Wherever possible there should be a shorter walk for older or infirm greyhounds and owners.
• Consideration should be given to access for the disabled

Rules – no wavering or variation of these
• Greyhounds & Lurchers only
• The walk is an ‘on-lead’ event
• All poo is picked up

Oh well thats a shame, no way would we be able to remove the matriarch and not the other two.

It looks as though they are having a sponsored walk tomorrow, maybe they hold regular walks as well which all your dogs could go on. Might be worth contacting them if it's something you'd be interested in doing.

Its just me and Diesel heading to the Oxford one now, I've been thinking about Honey for a while, but I'm thinking that although she's never shown any fear aggresion to a sighthound type dog she's never been around more then a few at a time, and as I've not been to anything like this I might as well just take the happy go lucky boy and see if any other walks like this would be suitable for Honey at a later date.

Oh and Diesel will also be wearing his doggy back pack on the walk lol.
