    Tell me about your Bullmastiffs!

    Who has/knows one? :)

How much exercise (mental and physical) do they need daily?
How are they energy wise in the house?
Training (ie are they stubborn?)?
Good with other dogs (in general)?
What are they like as puppies? Apart from cute :p

    Etc etc :)

ETA: Oh, what about slobber?
    Also health issues?

Thanks Azz! I had read it actually :D

The one thing that puts me off really is the size and the health issues! But will need to find out more about them :)

Hevvur had one and I think there is another called Phoebe on the forum.

I've only ever seen two apart from at shows. One was dog aggressive and kept on a lead and muzzled at all times (it had attacked several other dogs, nearly killing one), so obviously there was obviously no interaction there. The other one was a bitch owned by a local dog walker who was a nice enough dog but quite aloof.

Probably nice dogs in the right experienced hands, but equally probably not for the faint hearted.

The people who were stewarding at our club show have Bullmastiffs. They are great, so friendly and bouncy with big squishy faces. I think they are adorable and wouldn't mind having one one day. they were so different to what I'm used to with my Estrelas, much more lively and I actually got knocked over by one that was a bit enthusiastic giving cuddles.

    I like them ..
.They were on my list when we were choosing breeds ...
The size and health issues swayed my wife away ...

Yeah those are the two main concerns for me too!
Is the boxer healthier out of the two then?

I love BMs too, but when I looked into them a few years ago they were starting to look like Pugmastiffs which wasn't really for me! Not sure what the breed is like nowadays - still waiting for pics!!!!

I have met two gorgeous ones at a local park. The male Bullmastiff is a most impressive dog; first time I ever saw him he was thundering across the park towards me, Dex was standing beside me. I could see the owner looked relaxed so wasn't too worried. Beautiful dog and SOOOO strong...... He lets me cuddle him when I see him which is quite a treat

Then I met a female one with a different owner; she had a lovely pink collar on and the most grumpy expression imaginable:mrgreen: This was one clever dog: she worked out how to open the gate of the kids' playground because her owner's grandchild was in there and the dog wanted to be with her :)

Pic of the male - not a great pic and does not do him justice:

How much exercise (mental and physical) do they need daily? - phoebe has a good hour walk plus playing at home with toys alone and with me
How are they energy wise in the house? - she plays a bit but bear in mind that they sleep on average 16 hours a day. When she does decide to play at home i soon realise i need a bigger house.
Training (ie are they stubborn?)? If phoebe doesnt want to then there is no point trying, i have to catch her in the right mind for training. when we do training at home that is. Training out and about isnt optional and thats kind of the way i work. Im very much a no high way option kind of person and i think that works as phoebe is the devil for my hubby on walks as he will let her get away with murder (she even picks where there walking, he is a pussy)
Good with other dogs (in general)? Phoebe was but a little in your face and rough at times but after a few bad interactions she will bark at them and you can tell she has her guard up when saying hello and is very quick to show who is boss. it can turn from heaven to hell very quick
What are they like as puppies? Apart from cute. Cute is the word. the best thing to bear in mind is they get big very quick so you very soon have a 40kg puppy tearing around the house and jumping up and generally making trouble. She was very happy and confident as a puppy. They do go through a ugly stage where their all arms and legs and look really out of proportion. Teenage stage was hell and i very nearly gave phoebe up. She destroyed everything she could get her mouth on, she would be really rough in play, pushy with me and other dogs, mouthing alot and actually bit me once and i honestly found it very hard to love her.
Slobber - Phoebe slobbers alot! but its only around food and when shes over excited. we have a slobber cloth and just wipe her once shes finished eating or drinking. Slobber flicked on walls cleans off easy enough, slobber on ceiling can be a bigger problem.
Health - Phoebe has had skin and ear problems from around 2 we have just had to manage it. some of her skin issues have led to surgery's. she has had massive cherry cysts between her toes so now all webbing has been removed. She has also had her ears flushed under anaesthetic 3 times. So as much as the skin and ear problems are a pain they are not a life threatening issue. Thankfully we have only had 1 real problem that was a bloat and twist that nearly killed her. Other than that she has been pretty good but her dad died of cancer and her mum had constant problems with her shoulders and hips and her cruciate ligament..
