    Strange

Tikva woke up around 5.45am wanting her breakfast milk [pet substitute]. Poured some into a bowl for her in the kitchen then went to switch off the outside lights - I switch them on just before dusk and switch off when I am up and it is light.

Strange - the louvres in the shutter in the salon window were wide open and yet I close them when I put the outside lights on - not completely but about ¾ closed, and I always check when it is time to go to bed and I switch off the salon light.

On the way back to bed, while Tikva had a wander around [she ends up in her bed in the salon, not back in her crate in my bedroom] I noticed that the louvres in the back room were also wide open, and those louvres are always ¾ closed as the window is west-facing and it keeps the sun out. The only time those louvres are open is when I am using the tumble-dryer as I hook the hose onto the ornamental grill - all back and side windows have grills on them since my neighbour's bungalow was broken into a while back.

But, why open the louvres [from the outside] when the salon window is not only in full view of the road but also has an outside light illuminating it, and the back room louves when (a) it is extremely difficult to actually get round the back and (b) the window is obviously secure because of the grills?

I know I blame the mice for most things, in fact everything that gets knocked off shelves etc, but I hardly think that they are strong/intelligent enough to move net curtains and open screens in order to open the louvres from the inside, so they must have been opened from the outside where there is nothing to stop a hand lifting up and opening the louvres. Even so, they would have to undo the swivel thingies at the top and bottom of the shutters to open them if they were trying to break in.

    Definitely very strange.

I can't even imagine...break in's are so common around here they tell people if you come home and see something strange don't even go in the house...call the police straightaway. Of course we'd have to go in to call Callie off the intruder;)

Oh I bet Lovemybull! I remember before the steel door and keypad lock was installed coming home to the door being open. I was very concerned but simply decided to let the Caucasian Ovcharka investigate. Luckily no one was inside.

It was a wee bit scary as my neighbour is away and in any case her bedroom is the furthest room from my bungalow so she would not hear me if I screamed - and that lot the other side are considerably further away.

Then I realised that nobody could get in the back and with the front window well illuminated... plus they would have to undo the catches top and bottom of the shutter and the top catch is far too high to reach from the outside... plus they would somehow have to undo the catch of the screen... all catches being inside of course...

...so I closed the louvres to how they should be, left Tikva to do whatever she wanted, went back to bed and back to sleep!

That is very disconcerting, especially for a lone woman. Though there will probably turn out to be an innocent reason Malka, do take care, as we are living in troubled times. The sooner Tikva grows up and is able to act as your alert dog, the better.

@CaroleC - I am not over-worried now but it was a bit of a shock, especially as there is nothing at the back apart from my huge over-grown yard and then the agricultural fields which go way up to the main N/S highway. The Moshav is not fenced in due to tractor paths etc although there are electronic gates at each end of the through road which are closed from 11pm - ? 5am each night, and all day on Shabbat and Chagim. So cars cannot drive through on the road but can drive onto the Moshav via the tractor paths.

It is also possible to park somewhere along a tractor path and then walk here, which is presumably how my neighbour was broken into that time. Mind you, she still goes away each Friday to stay with one or other of her brothers, not coming back until Sunday morning, and yet she has not had grills installed. The day she came home and found her bungalow had been broken into was the day I telephoned Nir - he came round that day, measured up, made [or had made] the grills for me and he fitted them maybe two days later.

The only windows without grills are the salon window and the front window of my bedroom, both facing the road and both well lit at night. And they are my only means of escape in - Heaven forfend - a fire.

I am not worried about my front door as it cannot be kicked in as it opens outwards, plus it has not only a chain but also the strong clips Nir fitted so I could hook the rope on to keep the door partially open for Pereg to go out and in. Plus it needs a bit off the bottom [before I get yet another new door] as it needs kicking from the inside to open and and bdlooly great pull to open from the outside.

As for tiny Tikva to ever become an alert dog... she has not even learned how to back yet! Every morning when I surface I cannot believe how tiny that puppy is.
