After some persuasion (nag, nag, nag!) my OH has agreed to another dog next spring I was toying between another cocker spaniel or a cavalier (health problems are a real worry though) but my OH would like something a bit bigger. Springers come to mind, my OH would like the size of one, and I just love all spaniels The springer I knew was high energy and never settled but I don't suppose they are all like that? Anyway, my point is how do they get on generally with other dogs? Everytime I see pics of the gorgeous Isla (Ripsnorterthe2nd) I am swayed to black and white springers.
I can vouch for that, I know two who are quite calm but can have their moments, My sister had one years ago who was calm aswell. All of them got on well with other dogs, and two can put up with Skye. I am sure rips will be along with an essay soon though
me too, i dont think i could have a springer as i know they need lots of exercise & mental stimulation and can problems if they dont. my partner loves them grew up with working ones and he reallyyyyyyy wants one, but itll be me looking after it so its a no! has to be a Cava for me! i have found a great breeder, was about to give up to be honest as no one i contacted health tested, but then i found her! shes a lovely person used to show and breeds knows what shes talking about and was impressed by me...haha! i do like cockers too, i guess if you got a cava or cocker cross springer would that in theory calm a springer down? does it have to be a spaniel or any dog springer size? oh check out this thread about Springer it has pics too! http://www.dogsey.com/showthread.php?t=87862
Here I am! Aww thanks. We've had a few working type ESS, Isla is our first Show type, and I have to say the difference is pretty big. Workers need alot of activity with out fail, to be happy (personal experience of course). Isla, on the other hand, needs a fair amount of exercise, but when I'm at work and not able to take her for her usual 2 hour walks, she settles perfectly well with a few short walks and some ball fetching action. I'm so confident in this, that I'm even willing to let my parents (both retired and pensioners) keep a pup from her future litter. With the show types you'll always have the addition of the coat to deal with, which will need a brush at least once a week (this is the absolute minimum I would leave it, otherwise you start to find knots etc), but I really don't think I would ever go back to the working type again. Isla is so laidback and easy to live with, I don't think I could ever go back to the ultra energetic working type again! Do they get on woth other dogs? As a general rule, absolutely! Isla has always been more dog friendly than people friendly. Don't get me wrong, she loves her family and the people she knows well, but strangers just don't hold any interest for her, unless they have food! She is quite a brute, but that's mainly due to being brought up with a pushover for a Lab! She's been attacked quite a few times over the last few months, by many different types of dog, but she's never held a grudge. She's a little more wary, but certainly not aggressive. Generally they're a very even tempered breed if bred and brought up correctly! If you have any questions etc, just PM me. If you're looking for a show litter in your area etc I should be able to point you in the direction of a good breeder too.
Looks like Rips pipped me again LOL Therefore - Not much more to add. Want a springer ? - get a real one - go for a working type and put the hours in. You will be rewarded a million times over. pssssst - go for liver and white. Look for Rytex if you like more white or Badgercourt for liver.
