    Split season in Female Dogs

Although Georgina is a Shar-Pei I decided not to post this under her breed forum because it relates to female dogs of any breed.

Has anyone had experience of a split season with their four legged girls? :

Georgina was 9 months old when she came into her first season on March 20th. Apart from being a bit grumpy and not wanting male dogs anywhere near her everything progressed as normal and she finished her cycle on 16th April. On May 14th, a Friday, I found a smear of blood on the kitchen tiles and thinking she might have cut herself on something I examined Georgie only to find she had started to bleed again. As her temperature was normal and she seemed healthy and happy, I didn't take her to the vet as we had an appointment for the Monday morning the19th, to have her eyes checked..

Dr Paskos thought that coming back into season so soon after finishing the first one was abnormal, but after taking her temperature and questioning me about the amount of water she was drinking, her diet, her behaviour etc, then giving her a thorough examination could find nothing wrong. He told me to take her temperature regularly and monitor her closely and to bring her back immediately if anything changed.

I trust my vet and usually agree with his diagnosis, but somewhere in the back of my brain I was sure I'd read that it was due to a hormone inbalance. After searching online for hours I finally found what I was looking for, and I was right. It's called a "split season" and most commonly occurs after a female dog comes into season for the first or second time. All too complicated to explain, but basically nothing to worry about as at such a young age apparently the risk of infection is slight ... much to my relief .... I was beginning to have sleepless nights!

I was wondering though if anyone else has gone through this with their own female dog?

No my lot all come into season together but they've never had a split season. I have heard of it before though, probably on Dogsey but a quick search produced nothing.

Yes all of my female dogs came in to season within 3 months of first season, vet told me that if other bitches are in season then that can bring my other bitches back in season.
