SOFT-COATED WHEATEN TERRIERS PERSONALITY. Wheatens are: very very loving and kissy they will love anyone welcomed into the home, and it never enters their heads that a person might not like them cause they like everyone!!! So anyone who ignores them may receive extra fuss because they will think that you just haven’t noticed them yet!! Wheaten terriers are people dogs that cannot be left alone for long periods of time. The are inquisitive and adventurous and a fenced garden is essential as they are very keen to explore!! They are less scrappy than most other terrier breeds and they like to play with other dogs that they meet. COAT TYPE There are two different types of coat in a Wheaten. There is the original Irish type, which is soft, silky and falls in waves of soft curls, which has a high sheen or gloss. And then there is the English, sometime called the American coat. This also has soft waves and curls but is a lot heavier and doesn't have the Irish coats sparkle. The pure Irish coat gene is dominant over the 'heavier coat' gene. TRAINING The wheaten can be extremely wilful and stubborn. Therefore gentle but firm training is needed. The wheaten is a lively breed that is quick to learn. GROOMING Wheaten's do not shed their hair but do need regular grooming to keep this beautiful coat knot free. The Irish type coat is easier to groom that the english/american type. This is because the english/american coat is a lot thicker and heavier. PUPPIES Not many wheaten puppies are bred in England therefore if you would like one you will have to be put on a waiting list. You would be expected to pay £600-£650 and maybe more if you want a puppy whos parents have done well in the show ring. NEED TO KNOW MORE? This is a picture of my Wheaten Rosie, she has and English type coat and in the picture she is 6 years old. As you can see, Rosie is a typical wheaten, she is very daft and barmy but that is why we love her!!! Wonderful pictures and a great description - very informative. Wheatens sound like real characters :smt026
These are some pictures of our two puppies who are now 10 weeks old. The first pic is a side shot of Lottie. As she gets older her coat will change and the black tips on her hair will disappear. This will hopefully leave her will a coat that is the colour of ripening wheat. I did try to get a side shot of Dougal but he wouldn’t stay still for long enough!! The first three are of Lottie and the next three are Dougal. They are quite photogenic and Lottie will pose for the camera all day. sarah xxxxx
Just thought i would post some up to date pictures of the puppies. They are now ten months old and are little tinkers!! This is a picture of dougal.... And this is a picture of lottie.... This picture is one of (form left to right) Lottie, Dougal and Dixie. Dixie is there litter sister and is lovely!! When we looked at the pictures after taking them, Lottie and Dixie were never looking at the camera, yet Dougal was always posing!! This was the best picture out the lot, take note never and I mean never try and take a picture of three wheatens together cause it just doesn’t work!!!! Lol!! Hope you like them. sarah xxxx More wheaten at www.softcoatedwheatens.co.uk and www.wheaten.org.uk
that’s exactly what they are cheeky little monkeys! And they are sooo funny as well sometimes all you can do is just cry with laughter at their silly antics! And they stay like puppies till the end, we have an eight year old who is still likely to do three laps of the garden at 100mph and then run in and crash land on the settee!! Why? Just for the fun of it of course!!! sarah xxxx
Loving your softies, WM! The puppy pics look so much like little Bongo, especially at the moment cos her coat is all whispy and fluffy!
