Hi are there any wolfhound people on the forum? I had the pleasure of showing my friends 7month old dog at S.K.C on Saturday, what a change to my own dogs You are simply a passenger with these dogs thank god they are all (to the best of my knowlage) very laid back and good natured. had great fun though!!
The IW i know are all very laid back as well, lovely dogs. I don't have them myself though. I have practised handling one and i preferred it to handling my own gbgv. Think it was to do with the size etc, plus my gbgv can be like a torpedo sometimes
Sorry don't own an IW but I really like the breed and also the Scottish Deerhound. I have 3 Borzoiand I too was at SKC on Saturday. I have handled a wolfhound for a friend in the past and I have to agree they are so laid back and not so hard work as the Borzoi.
Hi Paula, This is going to be a bit thick of me (what I know about hounds you can write on the back of a stamp) What is a gbvd is it a griff something van something??? I had a good time the hound rings are a bit more laid back and dare I say polite than some in the working group. Only real problem with the big fella is once they get that shoulder in front of your leg the ability to stear is gone. shona
Hi lovezois My friend that owns the dog I had at the show also has a deerhound they are loopy and great fun, Is it true that Borzois can jump very high from a stand still, I heard it is in the region of 7ft is that right??:?
I love the IW's also. I was there showing one of my Basenjis and got beaten by his dad for Best Dog never mind. Yes hound people seem more chilled than in some of the other groups. My mum has Norwegian Buhunds so have been on the Working/Pastoral day loads of times so know what you mean.
Hi Shona Yep he's a grand basset griffon vendeen. Must admit i like the hound rings as well and find them more relaxed. Wonder if it's a case of having to be chilled if you own a hound
HI Dougieipit Well I don't think they could reach 7ft from a stand still position but I do think that it would not be beyond them to clear a 7ft fence as long as they had a long run at it. My fence is 6 and a half feet amd they can stand on their back legs and look over it but hankfully they have never tried to jump it . Think perhaps it may be a myth.
IWH laid back, they are practically horizontal; think the most difficult part about showing them is keeping them stood up long enough to be assessed. Sorry IW peoples. Agree hound people do not in the most part take things too seriously, and seem to view showing a one big party after another, we love our hounds and everybody else’s as well.
Pitta you and I seem to have the same train of thought I agree we hound people for the most part take things too seriously and treat it as one big party after the other and we do love everybody's hound as well as out own. I sometimes wish more show people could be like that. We go for the socialisation as much as the competing and if I am repeating myself as I have said this in another post of course it's nice to win but win or lose as far as we are concerned we are still bringing home what is the best dogor in my case dogs in show to us.
;-) I really enjoyed myself that day and look forward to my next outing with druid, The hound people are so easy to be around, wish other breeds could be a bit more like that!!1 And if im having problems finding the IW ring I can follow the clink ckink ckinkety hiccupppp noise then:mini:
Have to agree, nothing like watching a beautifully turned out animal that is fit and well formed move around the ring nor that feeling at the back of the neck and the rise in your heart beat when you are lucky enough to have one brought under you as an exhibit. You may wish you owned them, you may envy the owner but you are still delighted to see that lovely creature do well. Also gives me pleasure to see or judge the ugly duckling that so enjoys it’s show that although it is not worthy of the name of show dog it would be cruel to deprive it of the pleasure it gets when strutting it’s stuff and receiving it’s applause just because it will only ever win if it is a singleton or shown under an incompetent judge the hound and owner are happy so it makes me happy too, and my congratulations and pleasure are genuine.
I found it very strange being congradulated in the ring by the other owners it very rarely happens in my breed, and you could see it was a genuine comment
