Does anyone have any photos of Rough Collies in the UK and abroad from the past or the present? I would be interested to see just how much the breed has changed over the years - as the breed from my childhood was a large dog, with much less coat and a less fine skull and muzzle than the type that seems popular today. It would also be interesting to see the different "types" in different countries.
Funny that, I was thinking the same and I have been looking at some UK , USA sites and the most famous RC of all time, of course xxxxxxxxxxx
This is what Rough Collies in Canada look like. This is my fav. breeder I've found. http://www.glasgowhillcollies.com/ To me, they look like what Collie's used to look like. the flat stop, and fine almond shaped eyes. Your collie that got breed at crufts I would have thought was crossed with a sheltie, honestly.
I think we need to import a few pups from the USA or Canada WW and get the British Collie back to what it was 50 years ago! ;-) I tried to have a quick look at this site before going to bed last night, but it won't load properly for me :-( Could you post up a couple of pics of their dogs (if that is allowed?) What are collies generally like in Canada now? Like the breeder you have put the link up to? I totally agree with your comment on the UK collie. It is now difficult in many cases to distinguish a collie from a sheltie :-( That is definitely not how it was in years gone by :-(
Thanks Alice, that is great. I love the second and fourth dogs - why can't they breed them like that anymore? :? Thanks again - those pics were just the sort of thing I was lookin for.
I have a Roughie. This is Poppy (Eilroy Starlight Flier, Born 2002) and this is Bracken (Jeadon Mister Bracken Born 1993) at 13 years of age I totally agree that RC's over here have gotten silly, if you go on pedigree sites, the change in the breed is astounding (and not always in a good way) Poppy looks totally different to my parents 1st Roughie ( Lassie, 1979...will have a dig around for pics)
I only have one very dog-eared sitting picture. I have never tried to get it onto computer and it is only very small, but I'll have a go.
Poppy and Bracken are both lovely dogs, but definitely look very different types. Poppy is more the type of collie I expect to see these days, which is a much smaller dog. Bracken is the sort of dog I like, and would love to see pics of your parents dog too
Poppy, bless her heart didnt have the best start to life, she was a kennelled (show) dog. But the owners (not her breeder) didnt do anything with her, didnt play with her, didnt walk her, socialise her, didnt let or teach her to be a dog. She only left the garden/kennel to go to shows (which she hated, and was retired at 2ish) or to try and be bred from (no puppies) so she was rehomed to us. Only in the past year has she started to understand the concept of play! Bracken (and his mum who we also owned) were totally different, around kids (us three) from 8 weeks old. Played with socalised, walked/trained, played with some more
Collies are very distinct from shelties here, there really is no mistaking them... not even a little. Here are 3 pics of Collies I got off the website I posted earlier. all three of these dogs are living in europe. Apparently this breeder has exported a number of dogs, as they are considered to be excellent breeders of the "Classic Collie" this one is apparently living in the UK and has puppies on the ground this 2 are in Germany Here are a couple of Canadian Shelties
Ooh yes, loving all those collies. I am not really a small dog person, so smallies don't really do it for me. Could you please PM me (if you know) which breeder has imported the tricolour dog please
Well, his registered name is Can CH Glasgowhill's Future Vision. They dont say on their website who owns him in the UK, but they say that there is amazing puppies being bred by him. Apparently, another one of their UK exports qualified for crufts, I dunno which year though. Maybe you could google to find out who owns the dog?
How interesting and I loved the site you left the link for in Canada I see they have an affinity with smooth collies too and gorgeous dogs as well.
My parents had Rough Collies when I was a child and I remember them being much bigger than they are today, I saw a sheltie the other day and it was tiny not much over a foot high to the shoulder evidentley there's a minature sheltie version now????!!!!
Was astounded at this years discover dogs how ythe shelties were toy sized and the rough collies more lower end of the medium scale, madness. Grandparents always had roughs, they were huuuuuuuge with beautiful heads
