    Question for jack russell owners!

lily is my first experience of the breed and i am smitten!

one thing that has become apparent recently is the fact she really does feel the cold. in the morning after her first pee she comes inside and really shivers! i mean she is vibrating! i usually end up with her under my dressing gown! in the evening she will quite often do the same after tea.

right now she is laying on her bed covered in a towel. she sleeps on my bed but i have a fleecy throw that she likes to burrow under.

is this a normal thing for jacks? i'm just slightly surprised as she is such a 'big dog' in so many ways but boy does she like to be warm!

They do shiver and once they find out it gets a response from you she'l do it all the more!
My first two managed to get my Mum wrapped round their little paws by doing the shivering, which meant she lit the fire and provided them with hot water bottles. They never did it for me as I ignored them lol, but at 5pm they'd sit looking atthe fire shivering.

Not all Jacks do this, but for all that they love running out in all weathers mine do like coming home and warming their tums in front of the fire.

Wembley shivers, and I ignore him because I know he wasn't cold, it was just for attention. Since getting Radley though, I have noticed he does the same, and he can't be cold either as we were inside with heating on. He probably got attention from someone else at some point.

interesting! that's exactly what happened last night. she was tearing around with the dogs in the fields and got herself covered in mud and labrador drool, but when we got home and she'd had her tea, she sat and shivered until i covered her with a blanket!:001:

only thing is she tends to do it when it is cold and she's been out for a pee. i wondered if she's reacting to getting cold paws!

My late Jackie didn't feel the cold I have to say, but my sons little one does I know this for sure, but I agree once she realises that it gets her a blanket with the trimmings she tries it on:lol:

jelly does feel the cold. she doesn't shiver all the time but she drops so much weight in winter. on cold mornings at the yard she does wear a coat and sometimes at home as we have no heating- i wouldn't worry too much

If your not sure feel the temperature of their ears. If they feel cold then your dog is cold.

ah they aren't stupid at all are they!

no, i just wrap her up like a baby, she loves it!

i've done that and her ears can feel a little cool. i reckon it's a bit of both. she's slightly chilly and she wants a snuggly cuddle! :002:

 i think i'm learning pretty fast too!

and you are so right there! she really is a delight and whilst she's small enough to be my little snuggle bug, she's got a big enough attitude to keep up with all the dogs we meet out. i'm are always getting complimented on how confident she is around other dogs and how well socialised she is. makes me a very proud mum!

They are confident little things. My JRT met up with a greyhound today. Although he lives with whippets this is the first time he's met a grey and was very happy around him. He certainly makes me very proud.

it's lovely isn't it! i know the owners of larger breeds have been particularly sweet. i guess we've all experienced 'precious little dog' syndrome where little fluffy has to be scooped up out of harms way when the nasty big wolf comes along.

i love seeing lily tearing along with a german shepherd or the lovely mastiff x akita she is pals with.

My Jack will shiver at times and I'm sure its to get a cuddle. He does like his comforts though and is never keen to go out in the rain! They are like big dogs in many ways and mine is so confident. He seems to get on well with big dogs and never gets intimidated by them. I remember him meeting a Boxer in the park and playing for ages until they both laid down knackered.

Oh yeah, mine loves nothing more than to lie under the blankets at your feet. Its so sweet but you cant move as she is stuck right next to you lol. During the day she had a blanket over her and gets the heater on her when ever she wants it. Saying that she is getting worse the older she gets. She is 18 years old now and we dont mind giving her the little pleasures in life as she has just started to get arthritus and we think the heat helps her :)

Ours always knew the warmest spot in the house! He had a rather spiffy little jumper for winter. If you think about it they have quite a fine coat compared with some. But my God when they moult you know about it.

i'm lucky with mine as she is quite unusual for a jack in her colouring and that her coat is more like a borders. :001: i took her for a lovely muddy walk earlier and she was definitely on vibrate by the time we set off for home!! a warm bath sorted her out though.:001:
