    Question for BorderDawn

Hi, hope you don't mind me posting here. I'm a new member on the hunt for a new pup to go with my 3 year old Irish terrier. I've had experience of Borders as a child and think for personality you can't fault them. Have known people with the combination of an Irish and Border though and they have fought a lot. Not sure if this is because of a lack of socialisation and closeness in age or something about that particular breed combo. Was wondering what your opinion was? Have you found borders aggressive with other dogs or is it only if provoked?

The Irish in question was like that with other dogs too whereas our Irish has been socialised from an early age (puppy and training classes) and seems to be fine with other dogs when out on walks. (he's now 3 by the way)

Be really grateful for any advice you can give. Having seen those two dogs fighting until blood was drawn and then being the best of pals the next I am cautious.

    Hi.
Of course I dont mind you posting here. :)

My Borders are not aggressive with any breed of dog, they are fine with anything. Irish are by nature a sharp, sparky breed but saying that I know of at least two people who keep Borders and Irish. One is a breeder up north who I wouldnt recommend, but another is in Ireland and I certainly would recommend them.

I think its more down to the owners and the socialising with them than anything else, and if you had the opposite sex to the dog you already have, I doubt you'd have any problems anyway.

Hi, thanks very much for the reply. Ireland is a bit far :) Do you know any breeders in the North east or Yorkshire areas that have a good rep and might have some litters at the moment or soon? Seen a few pics that I have asked for viw email from a couple of breeders and not sure I like the look of where they are keeping them etc. Hard to know what to look for unless we visit a litter but daren't because even if it felt wrong I wouldn't be able to just leave them.

We were wanting another male dog really, just personal preference.

I agree, I think a lot of the so called problems in breeds can be controlled if not eradicated with good socialisation and traning.

Thanks :) Most people have none left but they all seem a bit erm...abrupt when telling me they've all gone. I know it's business when it comes down to it but a bit of politeness wouldn't go a miss! Will mail you. x

Great help, thanks very much. I hadn't a clue where to start. Like lots of people I thought if they were on the KC website then that meant they were good. Know better now. x
