Proposed Beagle Breeding Establishment in Grimston, N. Yorkshire.

Some of you may remember the petition to Hull Council last year against the B and K Universal's proposed Breeding Farm for Beagles, which are destined to be used in research. This attracted over 40,000 signatures and the application was eventually refused by Hull Council.

B and K have now appealed this decision to The Planning Inspectorate in Bristol, and are asking for approval to house 300 breeding bitches, each of which they estimate will produce 5 puppies per year. The Anti Vivisection Coalition have launched an urgent petition to the Planning Inspectorate, which can be viewed at:- www.OpposeBandKUniversal.com
Please sign it if you think it is important to try and keep Beagles in particular, but dogs in general, out of laboratories. Much of the research carried out is of dubious value, and there is only one result for the dogs!

Think it's about time we abolished experimenting on dogs _unless_ it is for serious dog-related health ailments, and even then the research institute should have to demonstrate a strong case for the experiments to take place.

So much for the Government’s commitment to work to reduce the use of animals in research !

The most recent data available show that in 2012, researchers conducted more than 4.11 million experiments on animals—well over 11,000 procedures a day and a rise of 8% over 2011, according to Home Office figures. The rapid growth is caused primarily by the massive use of genetically modified animals.

Thank you to everybody who have taken action. Most of the testing on dogs is by increasing doses of whatever chemical they are testing. Could be drugs, fertilizers or whatever. If a fatal dose isn't achieved, the Beagles are killed at the end of the trial, and their organs are examined. Countries such as Japan ask for up to date test certificates before they will import products from GB, and this is how so much of the duplicated research occurs.
Smuggled videos on the net are heartbreaking, the dogs live alone in metal pens, their only liberty is a run in the corridor while their pens are cleaned - they never see outdoors. I just don't know how they manage to find staff who are prepared to work in these places, and administer what are essentially poisons to the poor dogs. It is easy to find out which companies using Beagles to test their products, and even certain dog food firms are not blameless. B & K's argument is that if the dogs are not bred here they will have to be imported from countries abroad, such as China.

There are also other petitions online, The Run Free Alliance aims to remove Beagles altogether from animal experiments.
A further petition has been put to the British Government, which would require experimenters to be able to justify to a Home Office Select Committee their reasons for using animals in research.

Yes, the Govt. Planning Inspectorate have made their decision, but are not going to announce it till after the General Election, (that is worrying) possibly early in June.

@GsdSlave Thank you for posting the live link Vee. Someone will have to tell me how to do this someday.

From the Run Free website, an update on the Italian case involving cruelty to 3000 Beagles, (see post #11 above).
Ghislaine Rondot, who is also a director of B & K, and Yorkshire Evergreen, has now been sentenced to 18 months imprisonment.
And, on the 27th. January, the Oppose B & K International petition reached 72,000, only another 3000 signatures are needed now!

Of course I signed, on behalf of Joe and Pikey my two great Beagles. More power to this organization; they are doing effective work in protecting our best friends.

The Government Planning Inspectorate has today announced the decision to approve the Beagle breeding farm in North Yorkshire. This will house 2000 Beagles to fulfil the demand for experimentation.
I do hope the fight can go on, but today I'm feeling sick inside. Despite the petition, the delayed decision just gave us false hope.

It came as quite a blow to hear that news earlier today. I just caught a glimpse of Brian May being interviewed - wasn't able to hear what he said but can assume he is against it!

Disgusted! I’m glad I didn’t vote for this party, the story here is the Conservative government overruling a local planning decision for a US company to come in and make vast amounts of money, and the Government will also no doubt will benefit financially in some way from this decision.

Bantin & Kingman shares the same parent company as Green Hill where three executives were convicted of animal cruelty at a similar beagle breeding farm.

It seems that the minister, Greg Clark, has granted permission for up to 200 adults, and 180 puppies at the Grimston site. The Beagles are to have no access to outdoor runs. This is far fewer than had been touted, but I'm sure they would be asking to increase those numbers once the dust had settled. The Yorkshire Post, (who deserve a Press Award for the way that they have led and stuck to this case), say that the petition against B & K's plans reached 100,000 - I understood that this was the figure that was needed to trigger a Parliamentary debate? It appears that there is still the possibility of an appeal against the decision.
