My sister had to chose a topic to do a project on for school, and I suggested gundogs, as it's not something that she knows about, or anyone in her class knows about, so she will actually learn something along the way! I am so excited!! I'm helping with all the research, and then she will do the actual project at school! We have decided on 'The Childs Guide to Gundogs' And some of the sections within the guide might be; - Gundogs - What are they? - Popular Gundog Breeds - Roles within the Shooting Industry - Basic Training for a Gundog - Working Trails (This might not get included) - Rarer Gundog Breeds - My Gundogs (Lucy wants to do a bit about the dogs that I own!) Can anyone think of anything else that we might be able to include. We hve 2/3 weeks to research and then she has a week to complete the project based on the research she has done! I've already been the library, taken out all of the 4 books they have on gundogs, and have started to flick through them!
How about the suitability of them as pets? As we know there are many spaniels (and other breeds of course) end up in rescue homes because they need a job to do and an appropriate outlet for their energy. Maybe highlighting problems general pet owners could face if they take on a gundog without thinking about how they are going to keep it out of mischief.
Forgot to add, I have a couple of gundog books (The Complete Gundog by John Humphreys and Hunt, Point, Retrieve Dogs For Work and Showing by Nigel Dear) if there is anything you want me to look up in those.
I'd be willing to help too if you need! Another idea (might be a bit much for what she is doing) but you could do a brief comparison of 'old school' training methods in comparison to more modern methods of training gundogs. Clicker training is becoming a bit more widespread and positive reinforcement rather than 'punishment' based methods.
