    Poor Chicken Dog

Sophie had such a fright today. We walked several miles to the pharmacy for some exercise and together time. She loves to hike and has high endurance. We got to the store and walked up to the drive up window like we usually do. She'll stand against the window and say hello to the pharmacist, they all know her.

There was a truck parked to the side unloading totes into the store. I guess they dropped one...on a steel loading ramp. Sophie heard that and almost jumped out of her skin. I got her as far as the sidewalk in front of the store before she went into a full blown panic attack. She stood there frozen in place shaking from head to tail.

I can carry her a block or three but the distance back home was several miles. I'm strong, but hauling a sixty pound moose that far, just can't do it. Fortunately my husband was home and came and picked us up. I suppose an alternate plan could have been mooching a shopping cart and pushing her home but I would have felt a little goofy doing it. Sigh, never a dull moment.

Poor Sophie. I hope she will be OK next time she visits the pharmacy. Ed had a panic attack in the park last year, (a shouty adult on a superfast skateboard). It took ages for him to forget it, he kept looking over his shoulder, and lost his ability to listen to reason. We just had to keep taking him back for short safe visits until the memory faded, but it took perhaps half a dozen visits before he felt safe again.

Thanks everybody, she was better after we got home. Was afraid she was going to have one of her barking nightmares but she was okay. They definitely remember stuff. Maybe three years ago we came upon a huge dead possum across the street from that pharmacy. Since then that particular spot has been rebuilt into a parking lot with attached building. But she still remembers and wants to go look for the possum when we pass the lot.

The only time ive had dogs really freak was years ago when I was standing on an island middle of busy road at traffic lights to cross ,a huge lorry pulled up right next to me, his ‘air brakes’ were so loud both dogs freaked, I was taken unaware, leads twisted around my legs and I ended up on my ar~e how we never got run-over ill never know, took a long time for them to comfortable about lorries again.
