    Not a Serious Barker

Poor Callie, from what I've read AmBulls are often known for not particularly loud barking. For him the effect is like seeing Hulk Hogan with Mickey Mouse's voice. Today a post person must have come inside the front porch to leave a package.

We have a " Beware of Dog" sign prominently posted and a good secure front door so it's safe for them to come into the porch. With all the snow out there we appreciate it. But Callie must have heard them out there. I could hear him from downstairs so angry he was foaming...absolutely enraged that someone would dare come up on his porch...but it came out sounding like

    "barkwhinewhinebarkbarkwhinebarkbarkbark"

So if you could see him from the window or door you would think

Of course someone coming in with the intention of robbery would see
    [IMG]

Then we would of course have to call him off so the officers would still have something to arrest:rolleyes:

Oh dear - anyone who has ever spoken with me on the telephone would have heard Pereg's two voices. One is that of a giant breed dog, and one is a eeky eeky chat chat wanna talk an' say hello voice.

The giant breed dog's bark is, of course, very useful for keeping away the shnorrers but it does not fool the bin men who turn up on Sundays and Wednesdays - they think it is cute, even though the little booger is rushing out with her hackles raised! Not that she dares go near them, but oh boy, does she make a meal out of it!

Phoebe(big dog in front yard)has a kind of squeaky, quiet bark for letting us know a non-dangerous person is outside, like the mail lady or delivery person. If she gets louder and deeper she feels threatened. That bark is for the man across the street, who she hates, or someone she's never seen before. There is a third really mean sounding bark that is reserved for the bear or other dogs that get too near the fence. When we hear that bark one of us has to go outside to calm her down or she will go under or over the fence in hot pursuit. And tiny Pearl....sounds like a GSD.

Among the loudest dogs I've ever heard was a Jack Russell at the dog park. Twenty pounds and he could drown out the Bloodhounds:D
Back to Callie...I'm imagining a prowler at the door " Awwwww it's okay little guy, I'm not gonna hurt you"...

The more I listen to Pereg's different barks and voices, the more I know who is outside before they come in - or even walk down the path before she sees them. She also seems to recognise specific vehicles belonging to people she knows are OK.

If it is my neighbour it is " Oh, wunnerful, look who is coming in, I luvs her I do, Oh I am so excited"! Happy happy dance from her, with sqeaks and squeals of sheer utter joy.

If it is someone she knows and is OK with even if she does not see them often, like Nir this morning who came to fit a new hook on the door frame [I was in the loo, where else? ] she has a different bark - also excited - telling me "friend, friend is coming in" - and she will let them un-hook the rope across the door to come in. Mind you, they know it is OK so no problem.

But woe be to them if someone she does not know tries to un-hook the rope and come in - I have a humungous people-eating machine just waiting for lunch! :D
