Hi Everyone I am going to be getting a male beagle puppy in about 6-7 weeks time! I have a few queries though, I am divided on getting a crate or not? I don't know whether it is best to get one and crate train him to be able to leave him in it when I go out or whether to try him without one first and only get one if needed! Would love some opinions! Also me and my Boyfriend cannot agree on a name that we are both totally in love with! I like original names! ANY IDEAS?? I am sooo excited and have spent a long time looking into the breed, I have been in contact with the breeder ever since he decided to mate his beagles and the pups were finally (it felt like ages waiting, we knew we wanted a boy sooo much) born, she had 8 (her first litter as well) 6boys and 2 girls and we have first pick! We are going to choose him in 2-3weeks and I am pretty sure what to look for but any other suggestions would be gratefully received! Will promise to post pics when he arrives! Amy x
Hi there. I'd never used a crate before our most recent rescue and I have to say they are very useful and provided they are introduced correctly, the dogs tend to love them, so I'd say definitely yes to a crate. Particularly good for the dogs/pups safety while they are going through various chewing stages. For names, I've always tended to wait until the dog is with us before deciding on a name - I think names spring to mind easier when you can see their character. Perhaps you'll get a better idea when you visit. What about a character from a favourite book or film? As to how to choose your pup, I'll leave that to others - all mine are rescue adults so my picking is based on different criteria. Not long for you to wait now, you must be so excited
Hello! I bet you must be excited. I remember that wait for them to come home; torturous! I'm sure it will fly by though. As for whether or not to use a crate or not, the answer is YES! 100% I would use one. I would not dream of raising a puppy without one now. For a start, they teach a dog to accept being confined. There will undoubtedly be times during your dogs life when his movement will need to be resisted due to travel, injury, being kept overnight at the vets, etc. A dog used to being crated will have no trouble being restricted to a confined space, whereas a dog that is not use to it may struggle. They also aid immensely with house training. A dog will not want to soil it's bedding area, so crating will encourage them to hold on. Puppies that are crated overnight will generally be clean over night very quickly. I know people that have NOT crated and have left puppies loose overnight only to come down to accidents every morning. After all, pups that are loose can go in one corner of their room well away from their bed. Most pups learn to love their crate as their safe haven. Putting the pup safely in his crate while you pop out for a while is also the best option, as realistically most people don't have rooms that are 100% puppy proof.
Thanks Hali I am very excited, I have seen lots of pictures already and am going to have my first look at the pups this Friday! I am sooo happy with how everything has gone and am very confident about the place I am getting him from! I think I agree actually about the naming, I will probably wait until I get him to decide for sure, I just love hearing suggestions though!
Thank-you I think I will get a crate! I already have a bed for him but don't seem the harm in having both! At least he can choose which one he wants to go in when we are home! Do you think that sounds silly?
Members usually like to join in with naming threads - why not do a seperate one under general dog chat asking for ideas - more people might see that
Not at all. My two youngsters have their crates in the utility room, two fabric cushion dog beds in our living room and another in our dog room (conservatory). They flit between the dog room and living room during the day and are crated at night.
