    My neighbours dog got attacked!

We were out walking, and as we usually do we go through some lanes on the way back as they are less busy.

Anyway, out of nowhere comes a 6 year old Lab who has aggression issues (he got attacked when he was a pup). As he was running towards us I shout out his name and say NO! I put my foot out to stop him as he gets closer but he side steps me  he proceeds to bite my neighbours dog on the bum (who was on lead) and who then retaliates and they scuffle. The Labs owner appears and grabs his dog. It all happened so fast.

It wasn't a major fight with no blood drawn but apart from shouting and trying to use my foot to separate them there wasn't much I could do/did. The Lab didn't have a collar on and I think instinct said keep your hands away!

Now I am wondering, should I have grabbed his legs? Should I have shouted louder? (I thought if I did, it might make him more aggressive). Should I have grabbed him? What else could I have done?

I am glad the Labs owner came out when he did!

Glad it didn't result in a serious fight and that both dogs are ok. Having been involved a handful of scuffles with Missy I've always gone against the "advice" of not putting your hands near the dogs, and have always pulled Missy off without even thinking twice. Helps that she's little though too, much easier to just pick up. You might struggle to pull off a larger breed.

It was difficult because my neighbours dog was on lead and largely in control. It's the other dog that was out of control and as I didn't know him well enough, probably thought twice about getting my hands near him. If he'd have had a collar on I might have grabbed that tho.

I should have grabbed his legs

When my eldest so who's now 34 was about 8 Dudley our Boxer charged out of front door while I was outside talking to the milkman, he leapt clean over the fence and tried to go for the milkman, I chucked my 9 months pregnant body between them and he suddenly stopped dead in his tracks because my ingenious son grabbed his balls. I wouldn't have thought of it myself but it worked a treat.

Tried that at a show once when two Akitas started fighting (the owner was to scared to do anything) it didn't work, neither did the wheelbarrow lift, in the end bit his toe hard and then he let go, luckily someone grabbed the other dog out of the way quick.

yeah I've found the wheelbarrow doesn't work either. What is it with owners being scared of their own dogs when they kick off?

She'd just finished her class and was rushing to swap dogs, as she was putting one in cage and bringing other out, it happened so quick, think she just froze, what annoyed me was that no one stepped in to help so it was left to me and O.H,except when we got them free one bloke grabbed other dog.

oh no, glad both dogs are ok. You did what you could azz. You dont react the way you think you would, when its been phoebe i have dived in like a nutter but when i had a very bad incident at the kennels i panicked and shut my self inside the kennel at one point. We have a client with 6 dogs, a lad, a golden, a newfie and 3 pmd's. When cleaning we let all 6 out in to the freeplay area on the front of kennel block. The lab found a piece of kibble on floor and all hell broke lose the other 5 dogs started to attack him, i was screaming and shouting for help but just didnt dare get close as they were all so big and it looked like they were going to kill the lab. I chucked the mop bucket of water over them and nothing happened so carried on shouting then got cornered by the fighting whirlwind so shut myself inside the kennel, i didnt know what else to do. Finally 2 other staff came and then i came out and we separated the dogs and put them away. We checked the lab over and washed him over with the hose as he was covered in blood to find the only mark on him was a slice to his ear flap! My god that think bled like mad. The whole situation was only about 2 mins but felt like 2 hours. Once all dogs were ok and checked over and just fell to floor and cried. Ive never felt so helpless, scared and relieved in my life. The fight looked so bad but must have been more handbags at dawn as i couldnt believe he only had 1 cut.

I carry a personal alarm with me at all times & if any dogs start to fight (really fighting) I press the button which surprises the dogs long enough to separate them, tried & tested on my evil one (Dottie) more times than I can count who now wears a muzzle when on park (we use tennis courts for her to have run without muzzle now)

I had an fog air horn when I had my large dogs to break up any fights at home.

Am glad you & your neighbour's dog are both ok
