This doesnt have to be labs only, but I chose the title because of what dog I have. But if you have another breed, please feel free to post about that too Looked at our gundogs pictures and noticed Ruthlynn´s Murph with the bunny. Got to think about Ally around our other pets and labs in generel around other animals. Speaking from own experience, I think labs are excellent with other animals and their friendliness and very sweet way of life makes them brill if you have other pets too. I have two ponies, an old cat and now Jac the parrot and Ally is amazing around them all She hasnt known all of them since puppy but really gets along great with all, even though it is still limited how much she has been with Jac (and never on their own). When we had the rabbits she was great around them too. Knew they werent toys and wildest thing she would do was lick them while I had them out to groom (angorarabbits). She shares food with the ponies (nick their carrots is more like it) and sleeps with the cat that she also protects whe she has friends over. Its really great to see and I love that she is this way Can any of you with labs (or other dogs) reconignize this or have your own experiences?
Ours are all fine with cats... but i don't think any of them would be OK with the rats or the chinchillas - maybe the movement is odd to them... or maybe ours are just not sure of other pets - but i would never trust any of them alone, or even supervised with the rats. xx
I think it was in Zoundz thread I was saying how good Oscar is with my rabbits, if Im cleaning them out, feeding , putting them in there runs etc he alwalys comes with me to 'lend a hand' and thats the way I like it, I like to be able to include him in things I do with them and he fully understands that they are not to play with. I can leave there hutch doors wide open and let them run around in our concervatory knowing he wouldnt do anything. He actually sleeps in the same room as my indoor rabbits, I think that says it all. I think its so important for them to release what they are and are not allowed to touch, and the fact that you can trust your dog means so much He is also great around kids, so if he can put up with them, other animals should be no problem
I have a lab too, and a cat. Luna doesnt sleep with Oliver, but she did, with the kitten we had last year, they played together aswell. Oliver will always be licked allover when Luna comes home from a walk or he comes in from the balcony Its very cute I've had her with me to a ridingschool, and she hardly blinked at the sight of the big horses. We have cows just at the end of the path, she has tried saying hello to one of those (didnt end so well, she got an electrical shock on the nose, poor thing :? ) My friend has a cat aswell, and its the same here.. He will also get the "hello"licks. And they have 2 rabbits now. She has been to sniff at them in their cage, no problem there either. Yesterday, she decided she wanted to say hi to the swans, we have in our lake They didnt think it was a good idea though and hissed at her I managed to get her back to me (I was standing with Bella onleash and a babycarriage, as I was going to pick up my friend's kids...) before the swans got to her.. But she is generally very good around other animals.. Which I think is very good
Went a step further with Murph and the rabbits letting Murph pop his head in the crate while I was holding him! He was fine and Dotty even gave him a 'kiss'!! Denzil, who's a bit of a wuss, hid behind Dotty.....but then, he's a bloke!! ;-)
Well my two with cats = not good. Casper hates em, Jack is afraid of em. Round horses they are both fine as OH has a horse and when they were puppies, were we lived we had the horse on the property with us so they grew up round horses and got on fine with them. They also learnt a lot of their manners round the horse as well ;-) Rabbits ... never tried them but think they would be ok, I would trust Jack a lot more than Casper though as he's a lot calmer and quite easy going. Casper gets excited a bit to easily, I've taken him into Pet Stores a few times and he's very interested in rabbits but never done anything really bad round them
Yep gemmas good with all other animals, we have a very old cat, and shes very gentle with her, but..........................she wont tolerate strange cats in the garden she always chases them out,but small birds ...sparrows and starlings fasinate her she'll lay for ages watching them hop round the garden.
Lol Ally wont tolerate strange cat in our garden either. In fact her and my cat gangs up on them and chases them out :? Teamwork I guess
Jake hasn't been socialised with other animals. He tries to chase cats. In fact, he met one on his walk today, while he was on his lead. It was only a little un and decided to stand it's ground, trying to bat him on the nose or whatever. Jakey hid behind his mum's legs! Other animals as follows: Cattle: Will look at from a distance. Sheep: Not so big, so let's play! (Hence kept firmly on lead!) Not really met anything else...
