Labradoodle - what are they bred from?

    Hi,

My next door neighbours have abquired themselves a chocolate labradoodle, cute little thing. I just wondered, is a labradoodle bred from two labradoodles or a Lab and a Poodle. I hope that makes sense, I know what I mean :?

    Thanks

A friend of my sisters bought a labradoodle and was told it would be a small to meduim size dog ...
He kept growing and growing ended up being a giant ..not what they wanted at all...lol

It can be either but if you tend to breed a male and a female of the same crosses especially the littler breeds deformities and health issues can occur.

My mum tells me that most labradoodles around are 2nd, 3rd generation, that is, bred from 2 labradoodles.

You get a first cross (F1 generation) and then the F2, F3 and so on. You can also get a B added to the equation (F2b for example) which is a backcross so a F2 generation labradoodle can be crossed with either a lab or a poodle.

For my sins, I was thinking of getting one a while ago so did a bit of homework. Still think they're beautiful dogs though, I just dont like the prices!

I guess the size of a labradoodle depends on what size poodle the lab mates with!

Our Labradoodle was a rescue from a family who just didn't know anything about looking after a dog. He chewed everything but when he destroyed their supply of cigarettes he had to go. Since he's been with us (9 months) he's been a dream of a dog, a crate came in handy to start with but only for the first 3 months. We have started agility and a bit of gundog training too now he's 18 months old.

I think i read somewhere that they only go to f3 of breeding doodle to doodle as after this they start to lose the desired doodle quailities?

I have 2 Labradoodles - one is a black Standard Poodle x Labrador, the other a brown Labradoodle x Standard Poodle.

Both have good temperaments, get on well with other dogs, and were easily trained.

Both of mine were cheap as buyers wanted the fluffy ones which did not moult - but I was not bothered about hairs on the carpet (or in my coffee)

My brown one has poodley hair, but it has remained fairly short (2-3 inches), has never been trimmmed and only comes out when she is brushed......my idea of the perfect coat:005:

When you cross two breeds you have no idea what the pups will look like or who they take after or if they will even have any of their parents personalities.

Nor will you determin their size any easier. You could have a labradoodle the size of any of the poodle size and they can even grow larger then labradores ive seen some big labradoodles out their that look nothing like a labrador or a poodle infact they loook more Irish wolfhound like o.0''

I did think about one as well at one point that was when I learned how much they were!

Wasn't there some sort of scandal a few years back, someone in Aus. claimed to be breeding doodles to type, exported loads for mega bucks, they turned out to be pedigree poodles!

I got nothing against crossbreeds as they are sold as that, I just don't like the price people sell the designer dogs for.

I don't like when people put two dogs of diferent breeds together for no reason other then a silly name and to make a few hundred extra quid more then their actully worth.

Designer dogs are too easily done these days everyone wants to breed the lap dogs and make a new one and dont realise what it takes to breed to achieve a paticular look, standered of health and everything else that goess into breeding. The pedigrees all though not pure did not look the way they did over night it took many years of breeding and experts to get what they wanted and a new designer breed comes out almost every month.

I have to post as I love the Labra bit of this cross breed.

Nothing is guaranteed when you cross breed, the same as when you outcross within a gene pool, so how those who are breeding Labradoodles to type by cross breeding, is beyond me.

Labradoodles were invented in Australia, as an assistance dog, and the cross did not include just Labs and poodles, however, the creator of the Labradoodle has gone on, famously, to regret his decision to create this cross, for the simple reason that they've been exploited to high heaven.
