THE KENNEL Club has announced the first policy change to result from the work of its Dog Show Promotion Working Party, which is looking into ways to improve and increase the popularity of shows.

The new policy will allow breed clubs to hold their championship shows in conjunction with another club, or with a larger general or group championship show.

Effective from January 1, it will mean two sets of CCs in the same breed can be awarded on the same day at the same venue at two different championship shows.

This change in policy will allow breed clubs, general championship show societies, exhibitors and the show itself to benefit from sharing a venue, the KC said on Tuesday.

"It is hoped that by working in partnership in this way it will lead to increased entries and therefore will be of mutual benefit to the world of dog shows,” said KC secretary Caroline Kisko.

"Societies which choose to adopt this initiative should advise the KC of their intention once a formal written agreement has been formed between the two societies.”

The working party has been considering a number of ways improvements can be made to shows as part of its dedicated strategy. Its remit was ‘to look at ways in which dog shows can be improved upon in order to retain existing exhibitors and to attract new exhibitors to the show scene’.

Its objectives were:

To as far as possible ensure that further decline in dog show entries is halted – including a review of the show regulations, numbers of shows currently licensed by the KC, organisation and management of shows and the allocation of championship status.

To identify ways in which the dog show experience can be improved for all existing exhibitors, show societies, judges and others involved in staging a dog show.

To identify ways of attracting more dog owners to KC licensed shows.

Mrs Kisko said she believed the first change was an important development for the future of showing.

"We hope that this, along with other working party initiatives, will have a positive impact,” she said.

Working party chairman Keith Young said: "We believe that this proposal will increase the number of available show dates and that will be advantageous to both show societies and exhibitors as it would lead to a reduction in costs for all concerned.”

The Kennel Club has published a set of questions and answers to help societies, exhibitors and judges with the implications of the new policy, which can be viewed at www.thekennelclub.org.uk/media/549093/dog_showing_faqs_for_same_day_ccs.pdf.

In addition, updated specimen schedules will be available on the KC’s website to reflect the changes. Clubs which adopt this policy can share a schedule if they wish, the KC said.
