I was approached by the KC junior handler organization, (not sure what you call them) at our annual JRT Midlands show & was asked if I would be willing to let one of their prospective junior handlers show K9. I said yes as long as K9 agrees,(sometimes he not happy being in ring other times he loves being in ring) So we met with the parents & their 8 year old son, I told Eric (their son) to watch K9 body language & if he's not happy then redraw him from ring straight away. Our group class came round & Eric confidently walked into ring with K9 who's tail never stopped wagging the whole time he was in the ring, Eric shown K9 well & had K9's attention when the judge was doing her examination. K9 won his class which put the biggest smile on little Eric's face. Its the first time the KC junior handlers have been at the JRT shows, there were 12 prospective handlers there (am going to have to look up what prospective means) all of them were showing dogs in same class group Eric & K9 were in, they were very good at handling the dogs, I could see lots of proud parents watching as their children (8 to 12 year olds) were showing strange dogs in a qualifying show class.
Ooooh! I think this might be a YKC handling class, (Young Kennel Club). Probably being called Prospective because JRT's are not 'official' till April. I wonder if the photos will be in Dog World, as Haley and Sarah, the YKC handling reporters hail from your neck of the woods. Well done K9, he really is a little star. ✴
There were people from KC there judging all the class groups plus others taking photos of all the winning dogs & of all the 12 young handlers. It was strange that all class groups were judged by KC judges, normally they only judge best in show, but this time they judged every class group, seeing a Labrador judge (have seen judge at Crufts judging Labradors) looking at the JRT's examining them watching them, then looking at some papers on table, then examining 6 dogs again that he had already examine, before picking winner was little strange. KC JRT's spec :deep chest, solid body giving a atheletic appearance , v-ears (not erected) full tail carried high, square head flat on top, muscular neck, straight forelegs giving solid square stand & must have minimum of 52% white body. (This is what was on the papers the Labrador judge was looking/judging from)
@6JRT's I can only think that this would have enabled certain judges to get some hands on experience of judging the breed, before having to do so officially, later in the year. You may well find that some of the judges were being assessed too, hence all the paperwork. The dog papers are still reporting that there is a lot of opposition to KC inclusion from the working section of the JRT Club. Was there any sign of this at the show? Actually, I find the situation a bit confusing, are there two JRT clubs - one which agrees with KC inclusion, and one which is opposed, or are they separate factions of the same club?
Yes the working club & show club The working club don't want the JRT to be recognized by the KC, as they are breeding smaller & skinner dogs (been mix breeding JRT's with Chihuahua's & Dachshund's to get smaller height dogs) they don't like the idea of the KC stating that JRT's must be no smaller then 10inches, working club JRT are no higher then 6 inches & have lots of health problems, with puddin legs, back (longish like Dachshund body) organs to big for bodies, eyes & kidneys, also they don't trend to live very long 7 - 9 years, unlike show club JRT's they live 16-20 years. Show club wants the JRT to be recognized by the KC to bring back the healthier solid 10 to 16 inches JRT's The KC is also changing name from JRT TO PJRT (Parson Jack Russell Terrier) not quiet sure if its going to be Parson Jack or Jack Parson but its going to have Parson in name somewhere, as they all originate from Rev John breeding his female dog.
The Jack Russell club of GB states dogs should measure between 10″ and 15″ at the withers. The body length must be in proportion to the height, and it should present a compact, balanced image, always being in solid, hard condition. http://www.jrtcgb.co.uk/breed-standard/ The KC standard is (10-12 ins). Substance and weight should be proportionate to height. Neither too coarse nor too refined. http://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/jackrussellterrier Is this a different club from the JRCGB ?? http://www.britishjackrussellclub.com/standard.htm as it gives two heights For showing purposes, terriers are classified in two groups; 10“ to 12“; over 12“ up to 15“. Nowhere do I see 6’’ mentioned could you give link to that please.
There already are Parson JRT's with their own breed club, and championship show classes. I can't see why they would agree to share a name when the body type is so different. It would be like Cavalier KCS and King Charles Spaniels all being called KCS! All that would be needed is for the KC type to be JRT's, and the dissenters to be called Working JRT's. I also don't know whether any decision has been made about Country of Origin, (or development), yet. There seem to be three candidates, (GB, US, and Australia) in the frame.
I agree with you Carole but I can only go on what the show club tells us. Same for you Vee we only find out info during the GMA the show clubs & working clubs send their members to the meetings, that how we know about the working JRT's being no more then 6 inches. The KC spec that the Labrador judge was going by said dogs must be no smaller then 10inches & no taller then 16 inches, (the paper had picture of JRT with line showing height 10inches to 16inches) going back to the 19th century JRT's were between 12inches to 16inches.
I'm totally confused about the whole JRT recognition. And I'd have to respectfully ask for you to back up your claims Tina that working line JRT's are somehow unhealthier than 'show' types, infact it's usually the opposite in most breeds. I have never heard of the issues you describe, although granted I'm not in the JRT community. Also, do you have links to the show itself you attended? As the breed is not recognized yet, as already mentioned in previous threads, the wins don't actually count for real show titles/wins. If there was KC appointed judges there then I'd assume, as Carole mentioned, that they were to gain experience. Well done to K9 though on being so well behaved
Show JRT's are still bred to the original spec that Arthur Blake Heinemann created in 1894 as the first breed standard. Working JRT's are bred to the Enclosure Movement of 1910 with no bred standard at all. Fully grown working dog Show dogs
Sorry Tina but the pictures you have posted are NOT from the UK. http://www.jrtv.de/berichtehtml/2007/DJ/04ring_2007.html https://translate.google.co.uk/tran...q/jack-russell-puddin-disponible/&prev=search What you’re saying does not make sense? Quote from The Jack Russell club of GB History has shown KC recognition to be detrimental to the physical structure and working capabilities of a variety of working breeds,” the website states. “We oppose any influence by any organisation or persons whose actions may result in practices considered to be detrimental to the Jack Russell and its future. Therefore this club is opposed to recognition.' Working JR Jack Russell club of GB Show JR from KC standard
There are quite considerable differences between Breed ‘types’ in some other countries as can be seen by the two sets of pictures.Therefor your pics are not relevant in UK.
