Is my beagle too big? a beagle-harrier?

    Hello,
we bought a beagle back in June, fully pedigree, we have all his papers.
But he's grown into a height of 18", with long legs instead of the typical beagle appearance.
He's a lovely dog, extremely energetic, even a 10 mile bike ride does not tire him out!
A women that we met whilst walking [/HTML]him, mentioned that he looks more like a Beagle-Harrier, a French breed. Could anyone shine any light on this? Or is it normal for some Beagles to be this height

I am sorry I cannot advise you as I do not know anything about Beagles, so hopefully someone will be along shortly who does, but I would have thought that a 10 mile run [I assume you are on the bike!] too much for a nine-month old pup.

    In the meantime

thats what i thought!, but some dog breeders advised that for him. as long as we don't go over about 15 miles. He's full of boundless energy!

    Thank you!

    Hi Joel

I would be inclined to agree with the lady on your walk

He looks like a great dog tho! I agree with Malka about not over-exercising a dog until he has matured and stopped growing. I'd guess that would be between 1 and 2 years for your dog.

We always thought he would 'broaden' out and look more beagle-ish.
His papers claim that both the parents were Beagles, but has this sort of thing happened before?
He's a great dog! We have a cavalier spaniel aswell, they're quite the odd couple I must say :)
Would just walking him on leash and field walks be best for him?

We haven't got him registered yet, but they were Kennel Registered. Where we have papers listing his genealogy to great grand sires, and both his parents are put down as beagles.

Can anyone help? I'm just curious as whether or not this is normal for some beagles or whether or not he isn't entirely beagle :)

You cant register him, only his breeder can.

What are the kennel names of his parents?

I'm pretty sure the breeder said they were, but we only seen the dam, not the sire.
Does he look like a cross? Or a Beagle-Harrier breed?

There is no such thing as a "Beagle-Harrier" breed. There are Harriers which are working dogs and NOT recognised as a kennel club breed, (in the UK) or there are Beagles which are.

If the breeder said they were, then you will have been given the signed paper with the transer of ownership details on it for you to fill in and sign and send off to the KC to get the dog put into your name. Im really sorry but you have not been given this, youhave either got a crossbreed or have been told a few porkies along the way. :?

    Oh I see :)
Well we did have papers for transfer of ownership, we just have not got round to it yet, does that count for anything?

You said you hadnt got him registered yet. You cannot register him, only his breeder can. You now say he is registered, so Im a little confused. Pretty easy really. If you dog IS registered with the KC as a Beagle, then he will have been given a kc registered name, yes? What is it? It will be on that change of ownership form. On his pedigree too :)

There is no Kennel Club registered Beagle called "My Pepe"
There is a bitch Beagle registered as "Lady Tess"

Whether that is your bitches mother or not I dont know, but it appears the sire is not registered.

No "Popular Milo" either Im afraid. Which would tie in if the father is not registered, because then the puppies couldnt be.
