Anyone got an Ikea Kitchen? What are they like? Any idea how long delivery takes? We have agreed a price with a builder, and a potential start date (subject to contract) so it's all systems go! Ikea kitchens seem to be pretty sturdy and they have some modern units, so am leaning towards them...
Well I fitted mine myself 16 years ago when I moved here, and not only is it still going strong it's still a current model, so I can still get replacement bits if I need them. I put a lot of effort into it and still wouldn't change it. Things to consider such as a dishwasher fascia panel, when I changed dishwasher models from semi integrated, controls on display to fully integrated, no controls on display, which I wouldn't have been able to do if I didn't buy a long lived door style. I didn't have it delivered I don't think they delivered back then but collected it all from the Brent park store or whatever it's called, it's the biggest in London. The only thing I had trouble getting was the deep drawers for the drawer unit, which were ordered and didn't appear on several stipulated dates. All I would say is try not to go for anything that is likely to be replaced in the next catalogue. The less popular ones can have a very brief shelf life which makes adding to or altering impossible.
Well I take it back they appear to have discontinued mine, It was only a matter of time. In fact they seem to have changed the entire range in one fell swoop, including the carcasses. So if you do go for it make sure you won't need to add to it at some point.
Wow you fitted it yourself.... do you want to come and do mine? I think some of the Kitchens you can buy now come pre-made as units, so it's more a question of just slotting them in. But then again, Ikea are the kind of DIY furniture so maybe their kitchens are just as easy to install as well? Our builder has quoted us for the fit now and as we are moving the kitchen into another (bigger) room he's going to have to do all the plumbing etc so might just let him carry on with it. What is the quality like? Has it lasted well over the 16 years?
My 3 men fitted my new Kitchen 8 years ago, but I brought mine from Homebase when they were having discontinue sale, I saved a fortune as my kitchen is 50 foot by 30 foot. I got mainly floor units & only 4 wall units (these hold cleaning stuff)
It came as flat pack but you could put them together in your sleep tbh. It took me a week from start to total finish. I had so many units I would have struggled to store ready built ones. Tbf I had fitted a kitchen previously so knew what I was doing and this time I included under wall unit lighting and flying shelves with halogen lights in too. So it can be a bit like blackpool illuminations when all the lights are on. It has lasted brilliantly, when I had an estate agent in a couple of years ago he thought it was a new kitchen, and couldn't believe it when I said it was 14 years old. I'm actually thinking about changing the worktops. sink and tap soon cos I fancy resin worktops and a new sink. Oh and I need a new hob cos my Smeg one drives me nuts cos it only works when it feels like it. I was looking at new hobs the other day and my one is still available and I still like it more than anything else I've seen but it's always been a bit temperamental, I dunno if I have a Friday afternoon job or it's a case of form over function but I'm a sucker for a stylish appliance.
