I may be wrong, but I remember last year Scarter telling us about beagle racing with her dog? Sorry to talk about a member who has not replied on this thread, maybe I remembered wrong?

She has 2 dogs - one about 16 months and a younger pup

As far as I know, they race the older one

Actually, these threads do have a purpose. A member said that HD did not effect her breed. Evidence shown here proves that assumption not to be true -- Beagles can and do suffer from HD. Thus running a puppy (of any breed) up and down mountains for 4 hours is not a good idea.

Well to be fair the member in question asked for another thread to be started as the comments were off topic in the one they were originally posted in :) It just so happens that they then went and started another one themselves after this one had been posted.

I can see what you mean but I think the thread comes from concern
and we can make it more positive - helpfull to other owners of new pups

I know it is too easy to want to do everything with your new pup
If it zooms around all day how can some training possibly hurt it??
If the breed in general are considered healthy then isnt it OK to get it to do more than you would with another breed?

So for any owners of any new pups

Hopefully the knowladge of some others on here will be a help

Personaly I feel letting a pup run around and play (within reason) is fine - forced exercise or training is a different matter -and bearing in mind that running with you or fetching a ball is really forced exercise - dogs with a desire to please you dont stop when they are tired and dogs have been known to 'fetch' themselves to death

Even if the pup shows no sign of problems at the times it has been shown that repeated impact (jumping, running on hard surfaces) can cause joint problems in later life

Also a pups brain is not fully mature and it can develop mental problems - for instance Ben went through a 2nd fear period at just over a year - this happend at the time we were introducing the seesaw, the dammage done then took a long time to overcome

There is so much you can be doing with your pup as its mind and body is developing
Teaching it that working with you is fun
    Teaching it to learn
Teaching it the basic foundations for the sports you fancy trying later on (eg listning to commands, focus, general obeience)
    Teaching it self control
Sloooowly building up the exersice time so that bones and muscles get a chance to develop gradualy and protect the puppy for life
Learning about your dog so you know when it is happy to work and when it is having an off day and needs something easier

..that breeder who recommends that beagles do not go off the lead until 9 months of age? No bloody wonder beagles are known for awful recall then, what a joke

Yep but longline recall training or off lead recall training in an enclosed area are very different to just letting a dog off the lead..

I think it's a shame that Scarter hasn't posted on here since this thread started. I always used to find her posts interesting.

Personally I have to limit my dog's exercise. He's a year old next week and a border collie. He would quite happily (and has done when we haven't caught him in time) run around until he made himself sick. He just has no sense in that department.

I found last summer hard not being able to do much exercise with him and am looking forward to rather more this year. Although I have a suspicion that I have a dog that will always have to be told when to stop running around.
