Hi I have a 9 month old Lab, she is from working stock and appears to have strong instincts with birds, water etc. I would like to do field trial training with her but have no idea where to start:? She can already do all the basic obedience, if i throw something for her she will go and pick it up but she won't bring it back to me either that or she will drop the object as she runs to me? Help?
I would try making it more fun for her to bring it to you. When she picks something up, have an exciting tuggy game with her. (Use a ragger or ball on rope to save your fingers!) Start when you`re in the house so she doesn`t get the chance to dash off with it. Don`t add the `give` bit till she`s happy letting you play. I would also suggest joining a WT or Gundog club - but be aware that some of the `old guard` trainers might still use harsh methods so go and check it out first.
Working Trials i'm assuming...retrieving is part of a trial in that discipline too. I'm currently doing gundog training and I had a problem with Flynn running around with the dummy. I was advised to teach the retrieve in a long, thin enclosed area (if you can find one) so the dog cant run around. He still doesnt bring the dummy back to me in a nice straight line but he does now bring it back! I also used a clicker and treat to reinforce the behaviour. Another idea is to get the dog on a long line and if they dont bring the item back, gently reel them in back to you. There is an excellent national club for gundogs (dont think I can name them specifically as they have a forum) and their website has articles covering all manner of problems.
