Hi everyone, I have an almost 5 y/o male GSP that has been suffering from yeast infections on his paws since the beginning of spring. We’ve been on antibiotics that seem to get rid of the infection and when the medicine is done they come back. We’ve tried over the counter allergy medicine, prescribed allergy medicine and have switched the protein in his food from chicken to salmon (which have helped his coat but not the paw infections). I’m struggling with where to go next, our vet is convinced this is allergy related but I’m not so sure. Has anyone else dealt with this/have any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
If he has yeast infections (which is fungal in nature) then why is he only on antibiotics (which are antibacterial)? My dog got a yeast infection in his ears. We were given some antifungal drops and I also used some drops of tea tree oil. Cleared up. Now when his ears begin to look a bit waxy, a few drops of tea tree wards anything yucky off. If your vet thinks it is an allergy, antibiotics are being prescribed to treat secondary bacterial infections related to the allergy. It will look better with the antibiotics, but the root cause (yeast) isn't being treated. I suspect it doesn't go away because the right meds are not being given. If it is an allergy on his foot pads, maybe it is contact related rather than diet related.
It is difficult if you have not been able to track down the source of the allergy. Has your vet suggested a referral to a skin specialist? I don't know which antifungals you have tried, and whether topical, or by mouth but veterinarymedicine.dvm360.com/review-selected-systemic-antifungal-drugs might be able to suggest one or two that you have not already tried. Sorry this link is not working, I will try to find out why.
Sorry, I have tried both with and without the www, and I can't make it live. If you type what I have put in red into your browser, it should work though!
